Tailwheel Endorsement

Got my tailwheel endorsement complete with Adam Rosenberg today in the Citabria! It was awesome. Very thorough checkout which was really nice. If anyone is thinking about doing it in the NY metro area, you should really go with this guy. He has thousands of hours in tailwheel aircraft and owns a Stearman and L19 Birddog which is pictured below.

Congrats! I think it's the best flying there is. Do you have any plans to keep current with it?

How many hours did you do for the checkout? Thorough and "did my checkout today" are a bit counter intuitive.

It a took total of 6.5 hours over the past 3 weeks. During that we did 3 points, wheel landings, 90* gusty crosswind landings, slips, grass landings, short field landings, spot landings to commercial standards, etc. I am really glad that he was this thorough though as it made me realize how sloppy my flying was originally! He would not sign me off until I could do all of those consistently. This is not the guy who would do a "quicky" checkout.

I am planning on staying current with a Citabria over in ROC this summer. It is not a skill I want to lose!

Hey Congrats.

I don't have much tailwheel time, but my few in a citabria makes me think it wasn't the easier TW out there. Congrats, sounds fun.

Thanks everyone! Just went up and got my spin endorsement in the citabria. Doing maneuvers like the falling leaf and holding a stall in a steep turn in addition with spins really increased my knowledge of aerodynamics. Spins are not an out of control maneuver like most people make them out to be...

Alright...for various reasons I haven't flown an airplane since 1994. At the time I was checked out and flew a C-140, Champ, Chief, Cubs, T-crafts, and various bigger airplanes (although not solo in the expensive bigger ones). Now, there was no "Tailwheel Endorsement" at that time. Now that I am wanted to start again, what is the rule? Will I need a "Tailwheel Endorsement" or am I grandfathered? Stupid question I know, but never really thought of it before. Seems like I wasn't worried about it before, but it has me wondering.

Had to have acted as PIC prior to 4/15/1991 in a taildragger. I'm good. I think I will build a Mullicoupe now.

If you landed a taildragger even once before the rule started, you are grandfathered in.

Not necessarily...

The reg states:

(2) The training and endorsement required by paragraph (i)(1) of this section is not required if the person logged pilot-in-command time in a tailwheel airplane before April 15, 1991.

Doesn't say anything about landing one...:D

Correct, though if you had logged a landing, it is safe to say you logged at least some time ;)

Again... not necessarily.

I have logged time and landings in a Citabria prior to 4/15/1991...

BUT, I could not log it as PIC so therefore I had to have the endorsement.

Oh boy, the Rah-cha-cha Air Center!

Good to hear on the tailwheel endorsement, congrats. I have to say, my favorite taildragger is a battle between a Starduster and a Pitts!

Take care,

I just started my tailwheel endorsement in Poplar Grove, IL. Flew the Cub for the first time on Saturday....really awesome experience!!
