Taildraggers: You love em or hate em?

Re: Taildraggers: You gotta love 'em!

I have a feeling that many will call this thread blasphemy..............(Waco)

Can't wait to get my tailwheel endorsement. Looks like a blast, and I'd like to get some time in some antique iron........

There are hundreds of airplanes that people will never fly because the third wheel is out back. Tailwheel flying is awesome!

Can't beat the Cessna 180/185 series. Short, soft, grass, rocks, floats, heavy... They don't care!

"Just keep the tail behind the nose and the nose in front of the tail."

Why didn't you choose the option that would allow everyone to see how everyone else voted so I would know who to shun. Planning fail on your part.

The best time I ever spent flying was in a PA-18 doing Beach Patrol for Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties.

Back in the day, one of my early instructors talked me into a sort of irrational fear of taildraggers. "Bad idea," he said. "You go out you ground loop one, and you ding the airplane- now your record is tarnished. Never get a job anywhere."

As I'd previously gotten an aerobatic hop in a Citabria, I wasn't really sure why he was so apprehensive, but it stuck with me.

Then again, if I let that stick with me, I'll never get to fly a P-47 or an F-4U or anything similar. Hot rods, they are. Think I may get me some of that someday.

Speaking of things dragging their ass, why hasn't that weight loss ticker moved?

I'll bet you $20 my next ten pounds goes faster than your next five.

You know every day you step foot into an airplane your record could be tarnished.

Waco I made the votes private for the benefit of the community. If taildragger fanboys like you found out who didn't share your liking for 'em, well they'd have to live in constant fear. Who knows what a country boy like yourself is capable of!

. Never get a job anywhere..
I guess it is good I ain't looking for a job. Almost all of the flying I do is in taildraggers. I don't see what the real difference is - it is an airplane. If you can keep tricycle gear on the centerline, you probably ain't gonna groundloop a taildragger. Even if you do, it usually isn't the end of the world.

IME, there are two types of pilots. Those fly tailwheel and those who fear them. With rare exception, those who love them are those who fly them and those who fear them are those who have never set foot in one. I've never met anyone who hated tailwheel airplanes and I'm not sure why anyone would.

Interesting hypothetical:

If you lost your medical and was going to do something to "tarnish your record" (since it woudn't matter much at that point) - what would you do, and in what?

For me it would probably be something done when the St. Louis Arch was not open and involve flying a Clip-Wing Monocoupe under it and then pulling into vertical rolls.

Yep. I suppose his statement was just enough to spook me. Beyond that, a practical application never really came up for me. Tail dragger flying would have just been for the fun of it, really, and my money all went towards specific flight training goals.

What types do you fly? If I ever have some money burning a hole in my pocket, maybe I'll do the endorsement.
