Job Description

Boeing Research and Technology in Saint Louis seeks a multi-talented person with both tactical fighter pilot experience and unmanned air system operator experience to perform Human-Systems Interface (HSI) work within its Autonomous and Human Systems team. Tasks can be broad ranging, with an expected focus on HSI topics for cockpits and crew stations in military platforms and unmanned platform control stations. Tasks may include designing user interfaces to enable operators to work in complex, networked and uncertain environments. Tasks may include experimental design, statistical analyses, working with simulations and lab evaluations of HSI related technologies. Tasks also may include pursuit of new business by interacting with potential customers and supporting proposal writing. Therefore good people skills and good oral and written communication skills are very desirable.

An ability to travel is required. Multiple trips per year are possible within the continental U.S. Rare international trips are possible.

The ideal person for this position:

Applies an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to plan, design, develop and verify a lifecycle balanced system-of-systems and system solutions. Evaluates customer and operational needs to define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters and assure compatibility of all physical, functional and program interfaces. Incorporates a variety of quality factors into a preferred configuration to ensure mission success. Develops the planning, organization, implementation and monitoring of requirements management processes, tools, risk, issues, opportunity management and technology readiness assessment processes. Resolves cross-functional technical issues.

Applies human and vehicle system requirements to develop a wide range of complex crew systems design solutions such as crew stations. Develops requirements for procured components and evaluates supplier proposals. Collaborates with customers and other engineering disciplines to ensure product functionality, certification and safety requirements are satisfied.

Performs analysis of crew systems and crew operational issues encountered by customers and users in order to identify causes and develop solutions.

Gathers and analyzes objectives and constraints from sources such as concept of operations, customer and regulatory criteria and lessons learned, in order to define detailed crew systems and human interface design requirements for safe and effective systems.

Develops crew systems and human interface designs for operators using appropriate engineering principles. Performs activities such as product layout and design, work load studies, and simulations in order to generate crew systems and human interface design solutions. Collaborates with customers and other engineering disciplines to ensure final designs are fully integrated.

Develops requirements for crew systems and human interface designs by conducting activities such as trade studies, computer simulations, task analysis, and customer and design team interactions in order to flow appropriate requirements into the design.

Performs crew systems and human interface testing, evaluation, and analysis to verify and validate that designs meet requirements by developing test plans, methodologies, conducting tests and analyses, and documenting results to ensure safe and effective crew systems and human interface as well as support regulatory certification.



Qualifications


This position requires an active (or ability to obtain) U.S. Security Clearance, for which the US Government requires US Citizenship.


This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required.


Typical Education/Experience:
Level 3: Degree and typical experience in engineering classification: Bachelor's and 5 or more years' experience, Master's degree with 3 or more years' experience or PhD degree with experience. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Level 4: Degree and typical experience in engineering classification: Bachelor's and 9 or more years' experience, Master's with 7 or more years' experience or PhD with 4 or more years' experience. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard

Bachelors and/or Masters Degrees in Human Factors, Psychology or related subject matter, will also be acceptable.

Desirable, but not required, capabilities and experiences include 1) experience with Human Factors Engineering such as design, cognition, perception, and ergonomics/anthropometry; and 2) an ability to lead projects, including project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and close-out.

The grade 3 position typically is oriented towards the direct performance of tasks. The grade 4 position typically includes project leadership, oversight and guidance of a small team’s tasks as well as direct performance of tasks.

Unmanned Vehicle operator and Tactical Fighter Pilot experience is required.

Must be willing to travel at least 25% of the time.
