You beat me by about 2 minutes.

Looks like an aircraft has crashed into Flat Iron in the Superstition Mountains just outside of Phoenix.

The Arizona Republic-12 News Breaking News Team

Pinal County authorities Wednesday evening reported that a plane had gone down in the Superstition Mountains.

The county sheriff's office said a fire had broken out as a result, and that emergency crews were on the way.

The size of the plane or how many passengers were aboard are not known at this time.

Witnesses said the plane appeared to crash in the Flat Iron area of the peaks' summit.

The subsequent explosion unleashed a fireball that witnesses described as a "mushroom cloud."

Neither Sky Harbor International Airport or Gateway Airport in Mesa reported any commercial flights unaccounted for.

There is a certain company out there that has a history of this.

That said, it could be anybody. I spent almost 2 years doing maneuvers out there in the dark with students trying to kill me during a VMC demo. It is VERY easy to lose SA and get close to the hills.

I think it's because of the holidays and a lot of people traveling. So that way, when John Q. Public hears "plane crash!" then they're glued for updates with the presumption that it's a big assed 747 with 3,000 people onboard and they're selling advertising like food truck carne asada tacos outside a Jimmy Buffett concert,

According to the newest news report, guess I was wrong. Thankfully. Though this one sounds pretty damn tragic also.

Guess it was a Aero Commander flown by a company based in KSAD. I used to talk to those guys all the time when I was out-stationed there...

That crash site is right next to a T-38 that crashed up there in 1971, and a T-6 that crashed up there in 1942. Both sites not more than 100 yards from that one.

Conspiracy. Superstition Triangle.

Yup! Walked out on the back deck and said, "That's odd, the mountain is on fire..."

webcam of the crash near 30 seconds you can see the beacon then the huge fire ball. RIP :concern:

I will bet money it happened on the unpublished arc for the ILS into IWA. ugh...

The plane actually took off from Falcon Field, Mesa. Infact it was holding short while we were doing our touch and goes. Just as we were about to finish tower spotted the fire and we went to see if we could figure out what was going on. I told PHX approach that I wasn't sure but it looked like a plane crash, of course that was just based on what I've seen on TV. It's really sad though, apparently 3 kids and 3 adults going back for TG. RIP

Sad. Apparently a mechanic heard indications of engine trouble as it flew over his house, who knows...I'm pretty sure this company had a few twin commanders based at SAF during the Las Conchas fire back in june/july doing fire spotting.

Why would anyone fly an unpublished arc (You can do anything while VFR, but that doesn't make it safe) over unfamiliar terrain at night ? Sounds like a recipe for disaster if you ask me....

I have a 5 year old 396 in my panel that has a fit when terrain is near. My friends always ask why I don't disable Bitching Betty, this thread is the answer.

Really a shame this time of year.. There's a reason we never took the seminoles out there VFR at night too much. Also stayed out towards Coolidge or Rittenhouse.
