LIVINGSTON, LA (WAFB) - Authorities say a disturbing noise that may have startled some people Thursday morning was harmless.


People in Livingston Parish reported hearing a loud boom around 10:20 a.m.


The Baton Rouge Metro Airport said the sound was made by a BeechJet flying over the area.


Officials said the jet broke the sound barrier, creating the noise.


A man in Albany said it sounded like an explosion and shook his house.

I wasn't anywhere near Baton Rouge and you can't prove anything.

PS. I've uh "heard" that some guys pull the overspeed C/B, but that even around .83 she's gonna get mighty unforgiving on ya...

Yeah, I'd expect compressibility would become a fatal-type problem long before Mach 1. It's not even a particularly high tech airfoil. Now, is it possible that they got trans-sonic and some of the airflow became supersonic? Maybe.

I will say that I don't think it would fall apart (er before it hit the ground, at least)...Mitsubishi builds em T-U-F-F.
 
Maybe some other military hardware operating in that area and the media got the ID wrong? I know that never happens, but there's a first time for everything...

On empty legs I go to the back of the aircraft and watch the supersonic air flowing over the top of the wing. I have been trying to take a photo of it for ages. It doesn't make any noise that reaches the ground as far as I know.
 
Yeah, thats about as likely as a straight wing Citation breaking the sound barrier. I'm calling BS on this one.
