Stupid Street Sweeper

Qbicle seat warmer
My instructor nearly took out our plane and a street sweeper today:eek: :banghead:

Palmer has four runways 09-27, and 16-34. They are resealing 16-34, so the runway is closed. But the street sweepers and going up and down it, and not watching where they are going. The only reason the sweeper stopped was because he heard our engine as we were going around. He slammed on the brakes and we flew right over:insane:

Shouldn't those guys have a radio tuned to the local freq? I have seen mowers that carried radios while they cut near runways. Seems like a smart idea to me.

When I was learning to fly my CFI and I almost nailed a security truck. He would go up and down all the taxiways and runways about 1hr before the tower came controlled. He had a radio in there also. We announced our position and that we would be on short final. He stopped at one of the intersecting taxiways almost as if he was waiting for us than decided to pull out on the runway.

That made for a fun go around. I was just waiting for the nose gear to hit the roof of the truck and nose over. We came in and landed right after. My CFI was going to kill him. I didnt even have the plane to a stop at the tie downs before his seatbelt was off and door already open. He tore into him like no tomorrow. From that day on, the guy announced everything just shy of including what he ate for breakfast.

Wow...what was that guy thinking (or not thinking)????

I am always amazed at the lack of training that some of those airport vechicles have when driving in and around the taxiways and airport.

They let any airport users drive onto the ramp at the airport here. They have a special car lane next to the taxiway. Every intersection says "YIELD TO ALL AIRCRAFT". We come off the runway the other day, heading towards the fuel truck, when some old dude in his Caddilac crosses left to right, 20 feet in front of us at 30 mph. Luickly I was guarding my students brake's. There was no chance that he was going to stop for us.

Elaboration requested: The sweeper was on 16/34, and you guys were landing on 09/27, and the sweeper was not stopping at the intersection, is that it? Kind of hard to tell from the original description. At first reading I thought maybe you guys were trying to use 16/34 and went around because of the sweeper on the same runway. :insane:

Sorry about not being specific. But yes, you got it. We were landing 09/27 and he was on 16/34.
