Stupid Noob CRJ Question

How quickly do you sweep the controls on the flight controls check? Is it possible to be too rough with the linkages to the hydraulic actuators, or can you just slim-slam it all over?

Never really thought about that one, but I just do a smooth deflection to each quadrant. Not really sure why you would want to slam it all over, but I doubt that would do much damage. Why risk it though?

Thanks - Yeah, I'm just curious as I've jumped enough to see some different "techniques." Sometimes I feel like playing a certian Tenacious D song related to being gentle. JK.

They're probably slamming it around because it saves them about one second, and they think that the faster they do their check the cooler they look to the captain. Just a couple days ago I told an FO to do their whole flow over again because they rushed through it and missed four of seven steps, even AFTER reading the checklist. Slow down and do it right, that will impress me.

It depends - normally I try and clip a knee or two at the beginning of the trip to clarify who really wears the stripes in the cockpit, but you have to move pretty quickly to catch a good CA off guard. I find going right first normally gets the job done because they are pushing on the left rudder and raising their right knee doing so. I try and avoid tugging too quickly though, someone could lose an eye doing that.

I'm convinced that if I yank back hard enough, I'll be able to catch a captain I don't like in the giblets. It hasn't worked yet, but it's not for lack of trying.

Yeah I find I fly with a lot of reserve Captains??? Not sure why, must just be my luck.

I normally give them the knees nuts and nose warning.

That said, if you are slamming the thing around you really aren't going to get a read out on the synoptic page, which is what you are actually looking for. I'm guessing if people are feeling rushed then it is because CAs are delaying starting the second engine until too late and then the FO has to run through the after start/taxi/before take off checks while the CA is taxiing the plane on to the runway. Of course, Wheels doesn't have to worry about that:). (when are you guys going to get approved for SE taxi? And what's this that you can't start an engine while pushing back now?)

Sometimes I think the Company is trying to outdo mainline on their gas bill.

I'm a big fan of the no-taxi checklist now though. I like doing everything at the gate - it keeps both our heads up during the taxi.
