Study material

I was wondering what books and interactive training materials you would recommend for someone to study before they went to a flight academy. It will be about 3 years before I can go so I want to know everything I can about intrument, commercial, and instructor. I do plan on getting my private relatively soon though. Thank you very much.

My suggestion first off would be to start flying, and keep working towards ratings at your local FBO if you have three years anyways. When I started flight training, I thought for sure I was going to go to one of the flight acadamies as soon as I was done with school, which was going to be in a little less than two years. What I ended up realizing when I was done with school, I had just under 200 hours and was instrument rated. Suddenly, going to a flight academy did not make sense. So here I am now, a little less than three years after I took that first flight lesson with a little over 350 hours, a commercial single and mutiengine certificate and taking the CFI in two weeks. So a lot can change in three years, I would just take your training one step at a time, and see where you are by then instead of worrying what to prepare for the academies.

I'd have to agree with the above post. Start now and take your time because in three years you might not even want to go to an academy. As far as interactive training goes, you could pick up the CD-ROMs from John & Martha King. I used those for part of my training. They get pretty annoying after awhile but do have some good inflight videos.

When you are in the active duty Air Force 100% of school is covered except for books. So I am busting my ass to get my bachelores by the time I am done, which leaves me with no time at all. Finding time for a private is going to be tricky, and plus it would be dumb not to use my GI Bill towards a part 141 academy, this is why my situation is different and I kind of have to go to academy if I dont get an OTS slot. So I figure if I get the right books, during work I can break them out during slow periods and study up to make things easier on myself when I do go to an academy. Thanks

You don't have to go to an academy to be attending a VA approved Part 141 program. Many FBOs are now doing their training under Part 141, and a lot of those are able to accept VA funds. Do not take my advice to mean steer clear of the academies, many of them have excellent programs, but shop around first and see if you can't find a flight school around you that accepts VA funds.

I am most interested in finishing my ratings up as quickly as possible. That is why I want to go to one of the academies that has a 6 month program. Also, depending on how the market looks, if it was good enough maybe do one of the right seat direct programs with either FSA or ATP. Do you think those programs will ever be a wise choice?
