Stay away from Maine???

Maine is the number one state in percentage of income taken in taxes. Maine tops the list at 13%.

Everyone rips California, but they're actually #20.

Who's #1? Alaska at about 7%.

I lived in Maine for about a year and a half. Everyone's claim in America is that they are middle class, but with that said, the state and its middle class are dying. The only bright spot is Portland... all 60,000 of them. If you are already rich or have a well paying job in another state, and like the cold and bitter people, Maine is your playground. I'd just rather live where average folks are happy, working, and well paid. Of course i did live in Augusta so that colors a LOT of my perspective.

Well, it is winter time so that might explain the cold........:D

Help me out with that one. The income tax rate in Maine is 2.0% - 8.5%. Where did the 13% come from? Corporate tax rates are also far from the worst and our sales tax is average at 5%. Lastly our average property tax rates are on the higher side of the 50 states, but I think we rank between 15 and 20 which is far from the worst.

Income tax in California tops out at 9.3%, Iowa at 8.98%, NJ at 8.97%, Vermont at 9.5%, & DC at 8.7. When it comes to income tax Maine is certainly high, but not the worst offender.

Maine does have high tax rates on second homes, waterfront property, and certain luxury items. We also tax things like cigarettes very heavily ($2.00 a pack), and I imagine that it is things like this that might make Maine look to have a higher total tax rate. I can tell you that my wife and I own a nice house and make decent money for Maine, and we have very small income and property tax bills.

13% of your money goes to Johnny boy in one form or another. Thats the big problem. Income taxes is just one small bit of the pie.

My great grandfather built a modest camp in Orland many years ago (total price was 500 dollars). You don't want to know what the tax bill is on that place. Luckily it is paid for, and we can keep it in the family.

My tuition (over 9,000 per year) is comparable to other in-state pubic colleges. If I lived in a different state I would be going to that public college.

While I agree people are capable of living in Maine in this tax environment, it is much easier to do so else where. My dad has flat out said he can not afford to retire in Maine.

Baldacci and many other past governors have spent WAY too much money. Maine is in the top 5 states for largest number of state representatives. The only reason that Augusta exists is the bloated state government.

I want to know where the counties 3.5% from the airport goes. The school pays closer to 7% because our fuel and maintenance is taxed and then the rental cost is taxed.
