Staple??

It refers to a seniority list, not an airline. Basically, if Carrier A and Carrier B merger a staple would put the most senior guy at B below the most junior guy at A.

Generally not such a good thing for all the guys at Carrier B.

In the merger sense?

2 airlines "merge," both have seniority lists. One airlines seniority list gets stapled to the bottom of the other list. So a guy hired at airline A 20 years ago, is now junior to a person hired yesterday by airline B.

Imagine you had 2 sheets of paper, one representing Company A's seniority list (Trans States Airlines for example) and one representing Company B's list (GoJet Airlines, for example). You would "staple" the sheet for Company B to the bottom of Company A's sheet.

I hear about staple all the time. When was the last time it ever happened?

AA's takeover of TWA is the last oneI remember. Can't happen anymore due to Federal Law, unless both employee groups agree to it. Not much chance of that happening.

Thanks for the info everyone. It is just one of those things I read from time to time that I have no clue as to what they are talking about.

Shuttle America & Chatauqua...

Shuttle was quasi stapled. All Shuttle captains were downgraded and inserted as a block into the CHQ list. The FO's were inserted at a point on the list as 1 for 10. 1 S5 pilot then 10 CHQ pilots then 1 S5 etc.

But a pure staples is what was described above and creates a lot of tension between the two pilot groups....Not a fun cockpit to be in.

I know the TWAs pilots got hosed, but even that wasnt a complete staple job, was it?
