Stapedectomy???

Anyone know if have a stapedectomy performed on your ear is a disqualifying surgery in the eyes of the FAA? It's a surgery where they replace one of the bones in your middle ear with a prostetic to help you hear better.

I just got back from the ENT doctor and they are recommending this surgery for me in both ears. I really hope this will not prevent me from flying!!

Is there someplace I could find this out? Should I ask the FAA or can AOPA possibly help me?

Thanks in advance!!

You could always call AOPA and ask. Personally, as long as you get a statement of progress from your doctor and it doesn't reduce your hearing below "normal conversation at 6 feet away," I don't really see how it could DQ your medical.

Sorry to bring back an old post but the Doc wasn't on the board back when I posted this original question. I have not had the surgery yet....just curious what the Doc has to say about the surgery. I'd much rather not get the surgery but if my hearing degrades to a point where I can't pass a medical this would be an option to improve my hearing.

Are there any waivers to help with hearing loss? When I am flying I have no issues hearing things while wearing a headset. Same thing with talking on the phone...no issues at all. My main issue is hearing some people who talk softly.

Thanks Doc!

Are there any dangers to having a stapedectomy related to the changes in pressure you experience while flying? I've read a few sites that said certain groups of people are not good candidates for the surgery and pilots were in that group.

You mentioned "even with a hearing aid".....are there any special waivers required for a hearing aid? If I walked into any AME's office wearing a hearing aid and could pass the spoken voice test then I'm good to go no questions? I've actually thought a lot about getting a hearing aid since I'm not totally sold on the stapedecomy yet.

I agree that going to a big loud AME is the key...makes life a lot easier! :D

So....uh.....do you talk loud? :D

Thanks again for the quick response!!

If the applicant meets the standard with the use of hearing aids, the certificate may be issued with the following restriction:

VALID ONLY WITH USE OF HEARING AMPLIFICATION

We are not quiet or meek in our office.:yup:

The pressure change problem usually is present for the first 2-3 months after the surgery.
