St. Louis / Kansas City low time gigs

ozziecat35

4 out of 5 great lakes prefer Michigan.
Anyone know of a very low time gig available in either area? Wife & I spent the weekend in St. Louis with friends from Kansas City and fell in love with it. The thought of MCI isn't bad either.

I'm a low time guy (220) CMEL/CSEL. Currently doing IT stuff, so maybe that would help sweeten the deal. Working on the CFI right now.

Nothing is available to you at either location unless you do get that CFI. Low time work can be had here and there but you will not be able to find a job (ie regular money) at that low of time.

Best advice, get the CFI, CFII, MEI and be ready to work everyday till you get to 500 hours. Then those locations offer better for you. Nothing prior to that though.

I've lived here in St. Louis for about 13 years. It's actually a pretty great town, despite being a flyover. The cost of living is awesome. Going to any other major city is a shock to the system when it comes to daily costs like parking, food, etc. Nearly all of our attractions here (especially the ones that the locals frequent) are either free or very, very cheap (such as our amazing zoo [FREE] and science center [FREE]). The arts community is alive and well here. There is some free concert or show to go to every night of the week from Spring to Fall. Weekly free concerts. Free, amazing things like Shakespeare in the Park. We have several performing arts centers that charge reasonable ticket prices. Major shows and concert stars come through on a regular basis. We have one of the best city orchestras in the United States (and it is funded well, relative to other cities). We have one of the best baseball crowds in all of MLB... the city LOVES the Cardinals.

St. Louis has parks galore, most notably Forest Park, site of the 1904 World's Fair and one of the largest municipal parks in the country found inside of a city. The food and drink culture here is fantastic... PLENTY of very fine restaurants to go to, and you don't need to take out a second mortgage to do so. One of our craft cocktail bars was voted recently as having the 4th best cocktail menu in the world, and the owner is an accomplished and published mixologist.

Blah blah blah... it's a great place to live. I live in the city itself, in the area known as Tower Grove. Great place to live. I'm surrounded by neighbors that have kids (in the CITY, mind you). They love it, and wouldn't even think about living in the county. Anyway, if you have any questions about the area, drop me a line.

I'll be in your shoes soon enough with the low-time stuff.

don't you do IT stuff Steve? If so maybe we can discuss this a little more in depth. We're both super impressed with the area, and very serious about a move.

I can't think of much besides CFI work. Maybe you can luck out and find a pipeline gig.

As for places to live. My preference would be KC on my side (Kansas side) of the border.

Indeed! I'm currently a web and UX developer for a local clothing manufacturer's eCommerce sites. Typical sad sack story... tried to go to the Harvard of Aviation once I left the Navy, ran out of $$$ (just short of my PPL), had to drop school, and come up here with my tail between my legs, and try to make a living on my fall back career. That has treated me fairly well, and now I want to get back to flying, and see what I can do about doing more than pattern work on the weekends. My job treats me pretty well, but... man... tired of staring at beige walls all the freaking time.

Whenever you are in STL, hit me up for a brew and some good eats. My wife and I love showing the place off. It's a fun city if you can get past the problems it does have (a LOT of underlying racism, and a pretty big split between the people in St. Louis County and the city, among other things). And I would think that there are opportunities here, as there are several airports in the area, bunches of flight schools and corporate flight departments, etc.

Cool Cool, I currently do Windows Enterprise support for a national laboratory here in the Chicago area, & I'm getting going on my CFI, so I'd like to double dip if I can.

Uh oh, Matt is moving? :)

That's OK, I get down to STL to pick up my daughter a few times a year and my customer (and former employer) is there.

Are you taking the July run down with me? I can swing across the lake first, but I would rather avoid DPA......

And not necessarily moving, just exploring options right now if a low time gig were to become available.
