Spirit Airlines may lay off or displace as many as 60 percent of its flight attendants and 45 percent of its pilots in two months, according to news reports.

The low-cost airline, which is struggling to cope with rising jet-fuel prices, sent letters to union leaders last week, informing them of the decision, the Miami Herald's Web site reported.

The carrier stated that it would furlough or displace up to 448 flight attendants and 242 pilots on Aug. 1. The airline plans to close its New York LaGuardia, San Juan and Detroit bases and reduces its Fort Lauderdale base, according to the report.

Spirit would not confirm the exact effect the layoffs would have on flight numbers, the report said.

According to the Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Spirit lost $16.7 million in the fourth quarter.

The planned layoffs fallout in an industry hard-hit by record fuel prices.

I actually had a chance to interview there.... However when all this stuff happened I decided not to. I thought I made a mistake and one member here was about to kick my rear because of it. Unfortunate for sure! lots of good people there!

Sadly, as we're all aware, this will not be the last announcement of the kind. Lot's of planes getting parked in the not-to-distant future.

Good luck to all.

Sounds like that rumor was true. Not really a huge shocker comparing them to the other larger discount carriers that have went TU. Sucks for the pilots with the lack of jobs out there right now. :(

The magic of media. I love the fact that the article said they lost all that money in the fourth quarter--but neglected to say how much was made in the first three quarters. It also neglected to note how much their cost reduction efforts improved statistics throughout the year (and have continued in 2008).

Anyway, for all the doom and gloomers:

spirit is a great company. I have met some of the workers there, and they are all great.

sorry to see this is happening.

I hate that. I flew with a guy a month ago on his last few trips at my company and he was leaving to go to spirit. We kept talking about whether or not it was a good decision and he thought it was. I talked to him not to long ago and he was finishing sims so I guess it would mean him as well. I just hate that so bad.

A good friend of mine here at Eagle actually interviewed, got an offer........then turned it down after MUCH agonizing consideration.

I'm thinking he's glad he made that decision right about now.

Best of luck to all Sprit crews affected!!

Pleasant airline to fly on. I had a feeling something was going down there when I got a marketing email about their $33 one way fare offers.
