Speaking of cheap pilots....

I flew in tonight (5/26) for a trip starting sunday afternoon/early evening.

I figured I'd fly in with plenty of time, get a commuter hotel, get plenty of sleep and show up refreshed for my flight to Madrid.

When I dropped by the pilot lounge here in JFK, there was another guy sitting there on his computer. Apparently he arrived from LGW about 1700 today and is leaving for LGW the next day at 1800.

That's 24 hours meandering around the pilot lounge!

So next time anyone thinks I'm cheap, well, I ain't THAT cheap! :)

(He was a nice cat, I mean this far more comedically than scathing!)

Why would someone think you're cheap? I don't get it.... :sarcasm:

Seriously though....24 hours in the same pilot lounge? Eeewwww! That would be one smelly ride back to LGW...

It's certainly no SLC or ATL Terminal "E" but I didn't think it was THAT bad! :) But I'm the newbie so what do I know! :)

BTW, FlyingSig, a new user, is another NYC 7ERB'er.

That's my 'fashion pea green'! I've retired that to the 'sunday while doing laundry' stack. I'm back to the standard "Depeche" black again.

I spent my fair share of nights in the crew lounges at JFK & LGA. The first month I was based out there, they had assigned me day trips (STL turns out of JFK) and I had no crash pad yet. I tried to drop/swap as many of them as possible, but I ended up doing the crew lounge camp out more times than I care to remember. It just would have been too expensive to get hotels for all those nights, my pay for the trips I did wouldn't have paid for the hotels :(. Even once I finally did find a crash pad, there were times when I'd get into LGA from a trip at 11 at night or so, and I'd be taking the 6am flight home to ORD. It wasn't worth the hassle, time and expense (car service/cab) to drag my butt all the way to Kew Gardens for a couple hours. So I'd find a cozy spot somewhere in the LGA crew lounge to curl up for a while.

The one thing I learned in all my nights 'camping out', is that some people can snore really loud.

edit: Actually, I learned something else too: I learned it is possible to sleep for the night on two rolling office chairs pushed together! You just can't move around a lot or they can roll in opposite directions and then you fall on the floor.

Wow .... I think that there should be a reality show about the struggles of airline crew members and the things they have to do to not have a negative income. Maybe then the general population will stop thinking that they all get paid in six digits and work only 2 days a month.

It should be at the JFK crew lounge, the mice and cockroaches will add to the the scene.

If you try to do the same thing in our crew lounges, you'll get booted out the door.

I've noticed that crew lounges have a charming "boys locker room" smell about them. Kind of moldy, mildewey, fast-food-that's-been-in-the-trash too long smell, mixed with b.o. and always water stains. Who would want to spend a 24-hour layover there?

Ahh Freightess, you're making me sentimental and bringing back memories of before my boys moved out, when they still lived at home with mom. :)
Maybe I should can that smell and sell it to all of the empty nesters who are the mothers of sons. :D

And theyve threatned to start arresting pilots who do that....Just fight them off with your lunch packet of TUNA!

LMAO!! That's a great idea!

So Doug, now that you're completing TOE, do you have a line for June or do you get to sit reserve?

Also, did you find a crashpad? If not I might be able to help you out. A friend of mine - JetBlue 320 Capt - is changing bases to Long Beach sometime next month. He has a place in Kew Gardens. His new "crashpad" in Long Beach is a sailboat......

I don't have a crashpad yet. I very casually looking as I'm trying to balance the convenience factor of a crashpad versus the cost of a commuter hotel in the next few months.

I have a line in June. Basically, I smashed 12 days of flying into one block in the middle of the month. One commute in, two 3-day FRA's, then a 6-day CDG and I'm done! :)

No "30 in 7" international!
