Space Shuttle over NYC

The Shuttle Mother will overfly NY soon she was late according to the media

The countdown clock for the arrival of New York City’s first space shuttle will have to be reset.
On Friday, officials of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration postponed their plans to transport the shuttle prototype Enterprise to Kennedy International Airport on Monday morning because of a forecast of incompatible weather conditions. A NASA spokesman, Michael Curie, said the agency would aim for the next day, when better conditions are expected. Clear skies will also make it easier for the public to witness its arrival in New York.
Enterprise, which has been on display for several years at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s satellite site in Virginia, is ultimately bound for the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in Manhattan. On Thursday, the Smithsonian conducted a changing of the shuttles, rolling Enterprise out to make room for Discovery, which repeatedly carried astronauts into space.
By Friday morning, Enterprise was sitting atop the specially equipped 747 jet that will carry it to Kennedy. Mr. Curie said NASA hoped to complete the mission next week.
Susan Marenoff-Zausner, the president of the Intrepid museum, said safety concerns trumped the high level of anticipation for the shuttle’s arrival. “Enterprise will be here soon, and we know New York is excited for that moment,” she said.
After it arrives at Kennedy, Enterprise will stay there until June, when it will be loaded on a barge and floated to the Intrepid. In the Hudson River, a crane will lift it onto the flight deck of the retired aircraft carrier, which serves as the museum’s home.

It is set for the public to witness and I have a question. Can I go up in a small single and watch the arrival/flyover from the air? Will airspace be TFRed? If news helicopters could do it why not I?

If you missed n in DC and are in the area when it goes to NY I highly recommend making time to watch it, it's incredibly impressive!

That's what she said?

I'm sorry, it had to be done. I'll shut up now.

We'll be getting Endeavor sometime much later this year and I can't wait to see her. Hope you get to see the Enterprise arrive. Sad end of an era. I know the shuttles really became passe and outlived their usefulness, but I miss not having a real space program any longer. Never thought that would happen.

I am in NY I will see the Shuttle on constant basis when on the boat. I want to see arrival from the air...

I can't imagine there would be a TFR for the arrival into JFK, not sure how likely you'd be able to get an air to air shot of it though...

Slightly off topic but could you imagine if it did come in today? Flying an ILS to mins in crap weather with a shuttle on your back would be one hell of a "tell me about a time" story!

not sure how likely you'd be able to get an air to air shot of it though...

if I know ETA I would wait under Bravo along Coney Island or farther by Rockaway beach until it shows. Likely the tandem will fly over the Hudson River or Manhattan for show off before landing at JFK. If I know right day and ETA.... Where is mass media? Sleeping?

Managers Defer Ferry Flight Decision until Monday
04.22.12
WASHINGTON --Space Shuttle Program Transition and Retirement managers met Sunday afternoon to again evaluate the weather forecast for Space Shuttle Enterprise's Ferry Flight to New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. The group, in conjunction with Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum officials, deferred setting a date for the Ferry Flight until Monday.

Managers will convene at 1 p.m. for the OV-101 Ferry Flight Readiness Review and again will evaluate the weather and system readiness to support the Ferry Flight. They are expected to formally set the date at the conclusion of the meeting.

The latest forecast indicates a low pressure system on the east coast will deliver low clouds and rain in both the Washington and New York areas, precluding the flight of NASA’s prototype shuttle until Wednesday at the earliest.

Enterprise was mated to the 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) Saturday morning and covers were fitted over the shuttle's vent doors to prevent rain intrusion while the vehicle awaits its transfer from Dulles International Airport. The covers will be removed before flight.

Once the departure date and time is set, media will have access to the public areas at Dulles to view the departure of Enterprise. Media sending crews to Dulles should contact the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Office of Public Affairs at 703-417-8370.

After departing Washington, the SCA and Enterprise the aircraft are expected to fly near a variety of landmarks in the New York metropolitan area, including the Statue of Liberty and the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. When the flyover is complete, the SCA will land at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Several weeks following the arrival, Enterprise will be "demated" from the 747 and placed on a barge that will be moved by tugboat up the Hudson River to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in June. The shuttle will be lifted by crane and placed on the flight deck of the Intrepid where it will be on exhibit to the public starting this summer in a temporary climate-controlled pavilion. The Intrepid continues work on a permanent exhibit facility to showcase Enterprise that will enhance the museum's space-related exhibits and education curriculum.

Update from NASA. Scheduled for Friday. I am taking personal day :)

Update: Managers Tentatively Target Friday, April 27 for Enterprise Ferry Flight
04.24.12

WASHINGTON -- NASA managers, in coordination with Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum officials, tentatively are targeting Friday, April 27, for the ferry of space shuttle Enterprise from Washington Dulles International Airport to John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in New York.

Managers shifted the flight from Wednesday to Friday because of a large region of low pressure dominating the East Coast. The weather is predicted to be more favorable Friday.

NASA's 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) with Enterprise mounted atop will fly at a relatively low altitude over various parts of the New York City metropolitan area on Friday. The aircraft is expected to fly near a variety of landmarks, including the Statue of Liberty and Intrepid. After the flyover is complete, the SCA will land at JFK.

The Federal Aviation Administration is coordinating the flight, which is scheduled to occur between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. EDT, weather permitting. The exact route and timing depend on weather and operational constraints.

Nice I'll be arriving in JFK on Friday. Does anyone know what the 74 uses as its call sign?

Thanks! It'll probably be there by the time I arrive but you never know.

No problem. I always seem to just barely miss things like that. I have a JFK turn on thurs, one day early. A CHS overnight on Sat, one day after Boeing is supposed to roll out the first CHS assembeled 787.

At least I've gotten to see the enterprise sitting on top of the NASA 747 for the past few days.

Oh man I planned on flying in the LI area on Friday morning, but I'll probably have to land before I get a glimpse of this. Maybe I'll be able to work something out.

Work something out. Once in a lifetime opportunity :)

Yeah well it's a lesson and I haven't been signed off to solo yet, and my instructor has another lesson at 10. My goal is to get a solo sign-off on Friday, but even if that's the case I will probably be restricted to a small radius around ISP (probably wouldn't be a good idea to go sightseeing at that point anyway). My only hope is if my instructor's 10 o'clock cancels.

Now if you wanted a spotter in the right seat, that is a different story.

Solo is the only thing worth skipping aerial view of Flying Brick on top of The Whale :)

If.... your CFI cancels and if you have a car, show up at 39N hangar #3 0830 sharp. There is no guarantee we catch Pluto but chances are high.

haha, 39N is apx 40 min by sky and 2 hours and 40 min by land (and during morning rush, probably longer), or else I would definitely take you up on that, even for just a ride in an RV.
