Something that should never happen!!!

Wow.. 4 pages.. This thread went a heck of a lot longer than I would have ever imagined..

What if. What if... what if... what if. We can play this game all day long. You can mark me down as one of the pilots who actively encourages customers to come up front and see what our "office" looks like. I do my best to honestly answer their questions... to a certain extent. Even better, if there is a young kid who shows any interest in the cockpit, I make sure I them to come up and take a look around. I even get out of my seat to do so, so they can sit there and touch the controls. Do you know the effect that this could have on them?

Ask yourselves this: How many of you would be pursuing this career today if it hadn't been for some airline pilot who brought you up front and let you look at all the lights and switches? What about some military pilot who let you sit in their fighter jet? Or your Father or Mother who brought you to work with them?

I probably won't know about it, but it is nice to think that some time years from now a student pilot is telling the story of how he got interest in aviation, and it is because of me letting them sit up there and look around for a while.

As for the situation that started this thread: I think both sides could have played it a bit differently. Certainly this Captain could have been more friendly, but I also think the original poster could have worded the question a bit differently. Chalk it up as a big misunderstanding.

I agree with StoneCold. It wasn't bad at all. Don't think anyone would accuse of you being a "crusty old gray hair." Why, are you?! :p

Damn -- busted! :o But admit it, you read my profile too. ;) Sorry, but I only listed the month and day of my birth -- not the year!!!

See, I knew there were still pilots out there with a heart....

I personally think if you want to never allow anyone to the flightdeck but AUTHORIZED personel then main stream airlines are not for you....working for fedex or ups would be a safer option.

I am sorry....that little comment right there will probably cause this thread to go at least another couple of pages....haha

Speaking of this thread being long....for some reason I seem to have topics or thoughts that cause that. I just think this is one of many problems that need to be discussed. I personally do not think you can wear out a welcome on trying to get people to have a good attitude. That is why I fight for these type topics and I will continue to fight for these. CHEERS

We had the most charming 5 year old girl stroll right into the saab cockpit yesterday with her newly purchased goldfish (was with FA mom non-revving back home). She wanted to show us. Cutest thing ever!

Been flying at one place or another since 1993. Don't think I've ever seen a crew anything but gracious when it comes to cockpit visitors. If the kids are mature enough, I'll have them get the ATIS and PDC via ACARS and then have them dial in the altimeter setting.

I've been fortunate to be employed by companies that have had not only great pilots but wonderful people. If I had to fly with folks with poor attitudes or aptitudes...I'd be outta there.

A lot of pilots are great, but unfortunately, airline pilots in general are not great when it comes to customer service. More so than ego...I just don't think a lot of them feel comfortable dealing with people.

...because in the airline business, flying is only a portion of your job.

I've heard the same from a NWA pilot. Something due to them being behind the doors and never really dealing with Mr. Bossman or any problems directly with the customer.

And then on the other side of the fence, you have the pilots with "personality - plus", so watch out for them!! :p

It seems like a lot of professional (airline) pilots have their heads so far up their asses these days. They are just straight up weird people.

Granted I only know a handful of airline pilots personally and they are all great guys but a lot that I meet in passing meet the above criteria (asses). Most everyone on this forum seems to be the minority lately; meaning decent people.

Am I just meeting the wrong people and in fact the industry has some 'normal' people?
