Some Questions

I'm currently about to start my instrument training at Aviator in Ft. Pierce (private training at Aviator as well). There are some things that I like about the school, and some things that definitely frustrate the hell out of me here! I'm thinking of finishing up my commercials down here, then getting my instructors at ATP. I'm from Seattle, and thinking that I could possibly instruct there (since my CFI, MEI, and CFII would have been from ATP). Does that give me a better chance of being able to instruct there, than if I got my ratings at Aviator? Would I even have a chance of being hired on as an instructor in Seattle with ATP if I didn't get at least my instructor ratings with them? Should I even get my commercials with them? While instructing at ATP (Seattle for example) how many hours a month would I average, and how much of it would be multi? Are you paid for ground?

I would appreciate some informative feedback. Thanks a lot.

If you do your CFI ratings at ATP gives you a much better chance of getting on with ATP.. If you pick up your CFI's somewhere else, you basically have very little if any chance of being hired at ATP.. They have enough company trained people that they are afforded the luxury of not having to hire outside of those people..

Seattle is a posibility - when you show up for new hire class they give you 3 "I'd like to go here" options.. A wish list, if you will of all the atp locations.. You can either a.) go anywhere available or b.) hold out for SEA..

ATP does not give inital commercial rides.. They will give a multi-engine commercial/instrument addon though.. So if you came in with your instrument ticket and inital commerical - you could pick the rest up with ATP..

Flying in SEA monthly I cannot answer.. I would guess more than 30 less than 100.. How much of it would be multi? 90%.. Paid for ground? Hehehe.. riiiiight.. :) If you worked in Seattle you'd make $1,000 flat, unless they've added housing - in which case you would make $800 - if you chose to live in their housing..

Yes.

No.

Them being ATP or Aviators? I don't know anything about Aviators, but I know quite a bit about ATP--so I may be a bit biased. The only way to get your commercial with ATP is to enroll in their Career Pilot Program which begins with your Private-Multi. Should you? In my opinion, yes. But then again, I dont know anything about you, your goals, your previous experience or the other place that you are flying, so my recommendation can't mean very much.

You will have a much greater chance of instructing at ATP if you get ALL of your ratings there. Those who do that have a much better shot than those who just get their instructor ratings there.

All ATP instructors fly 50-90 hours per month. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I dont know what the actual average is. In Seattle, the majority of those hours is multi time, maybe some occasional single time.

All ATP instructors make the same salaried amount--$1000 per month. There is a small bonus system which can add a few hundred dollars a month. The real payment from ATP should be considered the opportunity to do nearly all of your flying in multi-engine aircraft. Because of that, you will make less money at ATP in real dollars, but you get multi time that you would rarely be able to get as a 200 hour instructor at any other flight school. Because of thise, ATP is a highly sought after place to work.

I would suggest that you call ATP and talk to the guys answering the phones to see how things work. They just all just got hired by ATP as new instructors and the majority just finished the Career Pilot Program.

Good luck,
Jeremy

Unless you live in the apartments, in which case, you make $800.. Orr.. I guess we all "make" $1000 and we pay them $200 for the apartments.. Either way.. You live in the apartments you check says $800.. You don't live in the apartments your check says $1000...

Jeremy is right though, there is a bonus system which helps.. I "made" $1,300 last month.. So, I had $500 of that lovely bling bling bonus.. :)
