Soloed my first student, but may have just lost my job......

So I get to work today and my flight school's owner tell us we have a "meeting" at 1830. Speculation was rampant all day among the instructors as to what the metting would be about.

I only had one flight, so I spent most of the day hanging around the office. Finally 1600 rolled around and my student showed up. I had a feeling this would be the day he would solo, so I made sure he had all the endorsements before we left.

We departed the class C and headed for a nearby uncontrolled field. We did 3 Stop and goes and my student nailed them despite a 13 knot wind offset from the runway by 20 degrees. After the third one, I opened my door, stepped out and told my student to do 3 more stop and goes then pick me up, and also told him not to hesitate to do a go around he felt uncomfortable. I grabbed my handheld radio and strolled to the edge of the runway. My knees were shaking the whole way and I was pacing through the grass in nervousness....I think I was just as nervous if not more so than I was on MY first solo.

I watched from the edge of the runway about midfield. My student nailed his landings just fine, except he did touch and goes instead of stop and goes like I had asked. Great feeling knowing that you finally taught someone how to fly from scratch. Took a while for me to get my first solo signoff (already have 150hrs dual given and 2 checkride signoffs), but this is easily the most nerve-racking part of being an instructor I've experienced so far. I got back in the plane and we headed back home...on arrival the meeting was about to start so I finished up my student and sent him out the door.

At this point about 6 CFI's/owners from our on-the-field competition walked through the office door and announced that we are going to "merge". They are going to buy all 4 of our primary trainers, one of our twins, and our C182 RG. We tried to figure out if were still going to have jobs but the best answer they could give is that "you will be quizzed and examined and you will stay on with us if you fit into our framework".....

I'm only a CFI/CFII with 650 total time, 120 multi, and 150 dual given. I don't like my chances....I just signed a 12 month lease on my apartment too.....all I can do is try to impress these people and pray they don't let me go. I hate being in this position, begging the guys I spent months competing with for a job, but maybe it will all work out for the best.

I also hate to see my old flight school go down. I earned all my ratings here, spent thousands, and put a lot of effort into the place. Now it will be no more, despite the term "merger" being thrown around, the new entity will keep the name of our competition, and we will move into their office....

So, I may be looking for a new job soon. I have no idea what I will do since I'm still obligated with my lease for 12 more months. There are a few other flight schools in the area but I doubt there are many openings. This is probably the first of many times this sort of thing will happen to me in the aviation biz.

Good luck, and safe flying out there....

Not necessarily. Some states are required to let you out of a lease if you need to move to take a job more than a certain distance away. Not sure exactly how it works and which states it applies to, but worth looking into.

Anyways, hope it all works out for you. Good luck!

What Flight school do you work at, and which one took over? PM me if you like....

I work for Lone Star Wings LLC, in Austin, TX. The comapny we are merging with is Alliance Flight Services, LLC.

I have nothing at all against the acquiring company, and I really hope I can stay on with them. I have a feeling at least some of my peers will be let go, but I hope not.

We have far more applicants than job openings....a new unemployed CFI drops off their application at least 3-4 times a week.

Georgetown Municipal (KGTU) just north of austin has a lot of flight training, but the largest flight school has a PFT deal going on where you have to pay them 400 bucks for a series of checkflights/interviews then you MAY be considered for a position. I haven't really inquired about the other places in GTU but they're struggling from what I hear. If alliance doesn't work out, I might consider moving to alaska and trying my hand at flying up there if it weren't for my lease. I'd need to save up some cash to live off of for a few months before I did that.....

It's a rough market!! Alot of the a$$holes around here don't even return phone calls - I think they avoid answering messages or anything!!!

I sooo hope they need something from me one day....

wow, i did my primary training with the University Flying club which is basically managed by Alliance now, and know a couple former and current instructors out there at both places. With the the two merged, theres not much competition left out at bergstrom, is there?

good luck on the merge and jobs, hope it works out.

Yeah, I have an interview/flight tomorrow morning with the chief of operations at Alliance. The instructors from alliance that I've met are all nice guys, I hope we can make this work for everybody.

Now that Lone Star and Alliance have consolidated, there are only 2 flight schools on the field, Lonestar/Alliance and The Austin Academy of aviation.

Lone Star/Alliance will be sizeable operation, 4 C172's, 3 Cherokees (maybe 4), 1 C182RG, 2 Gruman Cougars, 1 Baron. Unfortunately they will be selling our old seneca, our stinson, and our mooney from the sound of things.

We had four CFI's and Alliance has 5 or 6. So that makes 10 CFI's and 7 or 8 primary trainers. Dunno how well that will work out.

Send me your contact information and a fax number for the flight school and I'll write a letter on your behalf.

Seriously.

Sorry to hear your flight school had to merge with the other one. I believe the flight schools down here in FL are doing pretty well as far as hiring(not too sure). Well anyways good luck and I hope you get to keep your job!

Kick butt tomorrow and don't be hesitant to have them give me a call.

Doug your awesome mate - that is stella of you.

Best of luck with the interview. Go in confident that you can do your job as you can as your first student demonstrated!

Good luck buddy. You seem to have a great attitude Im sure they will see that too. Good luck to you.

Haha, well, It looks like things are gonna work out after all.

I had a series of interviews on saturday, monday and today, and a check flight today. I was asked a lot of "what is your background/what are your goals?" type questions, as well as some technical questions about IFR regulations and endorsements.

For the check flight, I flew with the chief instructor in a PA28-161. It took me a few minutes to learn how to use the radios (apollo avionics, I think). We took it up to 2000, put it into slow flight, did a steep turn and an ILS, then landed. 0.7 total on the hobbs. The chief is a pretty fair guy who does most of his flying in a Lear 55 now, from what I could tell I think I did fine. I lost about 75-85 feet and 20 knots or so on one of my steep turns, but I am used to flying 180hp cherokees so it needed a bit more power than I anticipated once I banked 50 degress. I was also amazed at how sluggish the PA28-161 (warrior) is with full tanks and two reasonably sized men in the front compared to the PA28-180. On takeoff I almost settled back into the runway after initial lift off, but I managed to climbout without doing that.

There is one more meeting/quiz session tomorrow evening. They are giving all the CFI's from my old school a test on the specifications of the acquiring flight school's airplanes and packaged flight training deals. Shouldn't be too bad....

All in all I greatly appreciate the words of encouragement and the letter of reccomendation from doug. Things are looking good....

Fantastic.

If you need anything else, let me know ASAP and I'll get on it.

I think it was a bit unfair of them to have you do a checkout in a plane you haven't flown before. Good job though, it sounds like you are in a good position.

Good luck!
