SODA upgrade

If a color vision SODA was issued a few years ago for a second class medical certificate, can I present this same SODA for certification for a first class medical certificate? I was told by the FAA in 2001 that a SODA is good for all classes, but was told recently that might not be true. My AME has been issuing me a first class certificate with my current SODA indicating second class authorization. If I do need a new one, should I go through my AME or the FAA directly to request one? Will I need to do another light gun test as well? Thank you.

This is a problem. Your AME should not have issued a 1st class medical without your possessing a 1st class SODA (or a letter of evidence).

There is some incorrect information on the AOPA website which says you can automatically upgrade to a higher class. This is incorrect. I told my AME about the automatic upgrade thing (I held a 3rd class SODA) and he just shrugged and said "OK" and issued a 1st class.

Two years later when I planned to continue professionally, I called up the FAA to verify that I was ok with the 1st class. I didn't want to spend $50,000 without having all the i's dotted and t's crossed.

Anyway, the FAA regional flight surgeon was like "Your AME did what?!" It really blew up. Anyway, the only way you can upgrade the color vision SODA is by taking a medical flight test/operational color vision test and receiving a letter of evidence.

I think all that was correct, but I'm sure the Doc will jump in as soon as he sees your question.
