SODA for vision

Just a quick question.... I have a lazy left eye (20/80 UC and 20/30ish C) my right eye is 20/15 and with both eyes together I can see 20/20 UC. I have passed all 3 of my first class medicals, but I'm afraid at some point the vision is going to catch up with me. What do you have to do as far as a SODA for vision and how long does it take?

Thanks!

UC- Uncorrected
C- Corrected

I too am wondering. I have to pick my AME's carefully or I stand a chance of not making it thru the 20/20 in each eye corrected. I'm 20/15 to 20/20 both eyes at once, my right one is a little weaker and with some charts it's 20/25. I'd like to have a SODA so I don't ever have to worry about it again!

P.S. D-E-F-P-O-T-E-C :D

What you can do is have an ophthalmonogist complete a form 8500-7 Report of Eye Exam and submit it to the FAA in OKC with a request for a letter of ability. They are using these more than SODA's these days.

I'd like to have a SODA
Interestingly, my husband just got done with a very thorough eye exam, and this Dr. has read extensive research and says that your over all health has a very big impact on your eye health, and for optimum eye sight, avoid fried foods and sugar, including soda. (Sorry, I know that's not the soda you were talking about, but it reminded me.) He also said to get your anti-oxidants.

Sounds reasonable but this information has not been published in the mainstream medical journals. I like to review literature to see if the research was well done or the report is just anecdotal.

Personally, I still drink sodas:) and do not take any extras antioxidants. The only place where vitamins or antioxidants have been shown to help vision is in protecting you from familial macular degeneration.

That was actually something he said, that it would help with macular degeneration. I don't know all of what was said, just relaying what he told my husband so it's 3rd party info now. Here are some of the links he gave us to read:

http://aoa.org/x4845.xml
http://aoa.org/x4812.xml Supposed to click on "Vision and nutrition" on this page but I don't see it anywhere.
http://www.aoa.org/x4728.xml
"Many optometrists are expanding their traditional roles to include other areas that affect eye health, such as nutrition. Research has shown that nutrition can impact the development of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which are the two leading causes of blindness and visual impairment among millions of aging Americans. Nutrition may be particularly important given that currently, treatment options after diagnosis for these eye diseases are limited."

I would agree that eating sensibly is the prudent thing to do. If you read the links provided from the AOA, you will see that their discussion is a possibility. I would be cautious about supplementing high dose nutrients (such as zinc) that can cause significant side effects and require other agents to counter those side effects.

I would refer you to the statement from teh National Eye Institute at the NIH. http://www.nei.nih.gov/news/statements/lutein.asp .

Regarding macular degeneration, the AOA states "Until further study results are available, the American Optometric Association recommends patients reduce their risk of AMD by wearing appropriated sun protection to limit ultraviolet exposure, stopping smoking, moderating any alcohol consumption, maintaining a nutritionally balanced diet, increasing consumption of foods or supplements that contain antioxidants, and seeking periodic optometric retinal examinations."

A word of caution: Be not the first to try the now nor the last to cast out the old.:)

We can't afford supplements so we won't be buying all the antioxidants and whatever else they suggested, but I was glad to have one more reason for my husband to eat healthy because just coming from his wife alone is never enough to actually listen lol.:)
