The Girlfriend and I have always had difficulties with the pat down since we always opt out of the scanners before we picked up TSA - pre molest. I had a TSA agent at a smaller airport ask me if I liked the massage because I opted out of the scanner and she had an agent tell her pat down agent "to make sure was very detailed as this one was a difficult passenger." Both incidents were reported with amazing results...nothing happened!
We also keep valuables in sight at all times (and we know our watches do not set off the metal detector) and everything else is placed deep into our bags as we have watched high value items of others suddenly never make it out of the xray machine on the other side....
