My mom just called me to tell me that the Continental flight she was on this afternoon from SFO-IAH (well thats where she was going, I don't know where the flight originated) had to be evacuated on the runway after smoke started filling the cabin after landing. She said the evacuation went smoothly on the slides and nobody was hurt, and the crew performed very well and nobody panicked.
She said the crash trucks were waiting for them, so the crew obviously knew something was up; also she said a pilot made an announcement after landing that smoke was filling the cockpit, and she said he said some sort of code and something like "the doors didn't open" and then they started to evacuate, she slid out the rear of the plane. She did not know the aircraft type, but it was 3+2 seating, so I'm guessing its an MD-80 of some kind; maybe Doug could offer some insight...
If anybody knows anything about what happened I'd really like to know; she said Continental didn't tell them anything, but they did give them a bunch of free tickets and miles and stuff. I guess the FAA will have a preliminary report in a few days so hopefully that will clear things up. I don't know enough about the systems on that plane to have any clue what happened.
The good thing is she said she's OK and not at all scared to fly again, just wondering what happened.
