When you thought it couldn't get any smaller.

New seats let airlines squeeze in more passengers

It's not your imagination. There really is a tighter squeeze on many planes these days.
The big U.S. airlines are taking out old, bulky seats in favor of so-called slimline models that take up less space from front to back, allowing for five or six more seats on each plane.

United had a slimline 757 riding around for a few years with survey cards in the back of the seat pockets. It had an extra row or two of seats I think. I guess people liked it for some reason, because now it's going fleetwide. Even the UAX RJs are getting smaller seats, seriously.
 
Ive sat in the slim seats. I found them to be slightly more comfortable than the old bulky ones. Nothing to dramatically different otherwise.

I'll admit im a bigger guy 5' 10" and just as a lifestyle change and getting healthy (also kinda company mandated, they put me on WeightWatchers) doing the Advocare 24 Day Challenge in 10 days Im down 9.1 pounds. and Im up to running a 5k in about 32 min.

We just rode on an Alaska -900ER with the Recaro seats, and we were impressed! Very comfortable, and lots of legroom. Nice plane, nice service.
 
To the OP; if I read this correctly "smaller" is an incorrect adjective with misleading connotations.

Didnt even know Recaro made aircraft seats, and this makes me happy knowing how AWESOME their automotive seats are!
 
Boeing's new 787 could also be a tighter squeeze in coach. The plane was originally expected to have eight seats across but United Airlines, the only U.S. carrier currently flying it, went with nine across. Those seats are just 17.3 inches wide. So, passengers will have a skinnier seat for United's 12-hour flight from Houston to Lagos on a 787 than on its one-hour flight from Denver to Omaha on a different plane.

Since I'm unable to use the arm rests anyway, I, for one, am glad they are putting in the more narrow seats.

The larger the fat roll pouring over the arm rest into my seat, the more comfort my elbows will have...............:fury:

I spend a fair amount of time in SWA seats and I can say that I like the new ones over the old ones too, the narrower pitch is noticeable but seat pitch hasn't been great since... well.. ever. The seats themselves are way more comfy and I don't find myself with back pain even after several hours.
 
I just flew on one of UA's new 320 with those seats. The seat actually isn't terribly uncomfortable. That being said the passengers were not happy there wasn't any TV or entertainment offered for the flight, but they did offer WiFi for a wopping 12.99.. Yikes.
