The Lark-95 went down shortly after 10:30 a.m. along North Alex Drive in West Carrollton, just across the Great Miami River from the Moraine Air Park off Interstate 75.

The pilot, Leonard Evan Notek, 37, of Castle Rock, Colo., was pronounced dead at the scene, investigators said. Notek was a pilot for Frontier Airlines in Denver.

His passenger, Nikki Romero, 35, was listed in good condition at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.

"She was literally trapped underneath the plane, pinned up against the fatality," said Chief Jack Keister of the West Carrollton fire department.

Notek's mother, Linda Notek of Beavercreek, said her son was flying the plane to Reno, Nev., after someone there bought it.

A witness said he saw the plane take off normally, then turned his attention away. He turned back when someone said the plane was in trouble.

The man said he saw the plane disappear behind trees and buildings, then heard the plane hit the ground.

The plane crashed upside down near a house, and the daughter of the woman who lives there said her mother was shocked by the crash.

"She thought it was a truck that might have hit a pole out here," said Michelle Snyder. "She looked out the door and it was a plane."

Snyder said another plane crashed in her mother's yard less than two years ago.

"Two accidents in our particular yard, almost to the date," she said. "It was July 1 or 2, two years ago."

This individual was one of the most outstanding people in the professional aviation community that I've worked with. We are all at a tremendous loss.
