If they paid during training, I would love to go there. I simply can't survive indoc, systems, sim, and then first year pay. It seems like a great company to work for.

I know it's very sad that SkyWest doesn't pay while in training…
When I was hired we were the first class to go through with no pay. I had a lot of friends in previous classes and was all set thinking that I'll make it OK with pay...

On the first day of class the VP of Flt. Ops. came and announced the change.. He was apologetic for such short notice and said that he will write a check for $500 to anyone, for any "getting here expenses", who would decide to quit now. No one took him up on that.. We all stayed in and starving to death aced the tests. The morale was as high as could be – it’s like at war – the more challenges the stronger you get.

There have been such issues before in SkyWest history - pilots and FA's even needed to pay for their rooms once upon the time..

I hope it'll change soon.
In the mean time we get a lot of pilots coming from other regionals and fractionals where they enjoyed the pay during training and the first year pay (sometimes even the second and the third) and became "financially sound".

Happy New Year everyone!

Do airlines that pay you during training also pay for your hotel room?

[/ QUOTE ]

Depends on the airline and thier contract. Mesa pays you but not for the room until you reach a certain point in ground school. I THINK XJT covers everything, but I could be wrong on that one. Pinnacle might pay for the room but not pay the pilots, or it might be like SkyWest. I can't remember right now.

ASA pays during training and also covers the hotel

As everyone should.

So if you fill out a online form and have the minumum qualifications you can just show up at this group interview? I dont understand the Process for sky west hiring. Can somebody explain it to me? Thanks

Yeah, you can just go to the group interview. I went to the one at LAX in Nov. They take your resume as you walk in the door, they talk about the company, their hiring plans, and all that sort of stuff. Then they give everyone the written exam, while they sort through the resume's and figure out who they're gonna interview. Then they posted a list of names and they split the group in two (those who will interview that day, and those who won't). Those who intervew that day will get the technichal/HR interview and if they like what they see they invite you to SLC to finish the interview. Those who don't interview that day are sent home and may be called in to interview later. Minumums are 1000/100, competitive is 2500. There were several people in my class with less than 2500 hrs.

Well...
The more interest you show the better. I had my resume walked in by a couple of friends, but no call. Then I read in their website about their open houses, and decided to go there.

When I showed up, they picked me up on the spot after the tests and interview process. I believe personally, that if you meet mins, and have letters from other Skywest pilots it helps. I had letters from friends working here and I am fortunate enough to have lots of turbine pic, so I think that put me in a better position for immediate consideration.

We just got email from corporate stating the hiring projects for 2005. Looks good. If you want to work here, now is a good time to apply.

My best wishes.

I wish I could work at Skywest, but... I am only 14 and have 1 hour, think they will hire me?

[/ QUOTE ]
If you live near a Skywest base, you could try doing some work for them when you get a little older. I was an intern for them and got hired. Several people have started out working the ramp then go on to become a pilot. Skywest likes to promote from within. Maybe you could get a summer internship with them while in high school.

"Minumums are 1000/100, competitive is 2500. There were several people in my class with less than 2500 hrs."

If competitive is 2500, how many fresh out of DCA guys who have the "guaranteed interview" get hired at Skywest with 1100/200?

I don't think there were any DCA guys in my class. I had the least amount of hours (1040). The majority of the people in my class had some turbine time, most comming from other airlines (Mesa, Air Midwest, Colgan, Commut Air, One guy from Gulfstream (yeah THAT Gulfstream), Ameriflight, Air Net. Only a couple people, myself included, were flight instructing. I don't think anyone came directly from an academy. I was instructing in Sacramento, another guy came from a flying club in Palo Alto, CA and I think one guy from ATP's. I believe the DCA guys are more likely to get their interview w/ ASA or Comair.

I live in Cleveland which is a Continental hub. Also a hub for Express Jet which would be my choice to work for if I had to take a regional job. Where I live in cleveland ( about 8 miles from KCLE) all of the planes fly over my house on approch to runways 24L 24C 24R. It is always a thrill to watch them fly over at night and then turn around and see them on short final. I think this summer I will apply at Burke Lakefront (KBLK) and see if they can use any kids to clean planes.

XJT's a great place to work even if you're not a pilot. Rampers/CSAs get treated well compared to other airlines. However, CLE is all staffed by CAL mainline ground crew, even the XJT flights.

wouldn't hurt to try. You could also hang out at the airport and see if you could wash planes for aircraft owners. It's a good way to make money and/or flight time
