I dunno.
Sounds like a fictionalized story, could be wrong I suppose. Seems to me if any pilot were to fly precisely by the numbers, it would be a nasa pilot in that seat. From his narrative, it seems he had to do some seat of the pants type of decisions (like when to rotate), where I would think nasa would have that stuff computed to a decimal point. Also, to be "surprised" at how it handles with the mass of the orbiter aboard was not congruent with the training this guy must have had.

well it definitely flew down the coast at 1000ft, i figured about 1500 when i saw it though. it was so big, slow, and low, we thought it was having an emergency until we watched it just fly passed and then out of visibility

You make some good points. I've never flown anything bigger than a Cessna, but I'm curious...

If the margins are that thin on a 12,000 foot runway, are you REALLY going to risk a takeoff in those conditions? That just doesn't make sense to me. I thought pilots of jet aircraft made sure they had enough runway to abort before V1.
 
I've seen this email too. Seems a bit sensationalized.

I think it's more that people think this telling of the tale isn't coming from the guy who did the actual flying, not that the guy who did the flying doesn't exist. You're links prove that there is a guy who goes by Jack "Triple" Nickel who flies for NASA. It doesn't prove that this e-mail was actually written by that guy.

Personally, though, I think its probably authentic and the guy is just embellishing a little for the sake of story telling. I've met a lot of fighter pilots.... they do that!

(Oh, and he got the runway number wrong at Columbus. It's 13C that he took off on, and he did take almost the whole runway to get airborne and climbed at a very shallow angle-- but there was more than 6 inches to spare... not MUCH more, but more).
 
I don't know about that story, but "Triple" is a really cool guy. He lives across the street from me. In fact, I can see his house through one of my windows as I write this. He even offered my roommate and I a tour of the Nasa flight simulation facilities here in Houston. O yea, his business card has a picture of the 747 carrying the shuttle. I just had to brag...
 
Since you're tight with the man, why not print out a copy of this and ask him if it's legit?

so i also live across the street from "trip" as we like to call him in the hood, and he said this is legit. Also he said i could ride shotgun in the shuttle on the next flight.
 
Sorry, I just can't see somebody with that level of responsibility acting like that, much less advertising it on the internet.
 
I'll ask him when I mow his lawn wearing a nifty blue flight suit next week.
