Shooter takes to the air...again

Well. I had my first flight yesturday. After 14 years, I don't think i did too bad. We did the normal first flight stuff. Preflights, takeoff, level flight, turns, climbs, decents combinations, followed by landing. I have to say, either the engine is a lot more powerful in a C172 than a C152 or I have totally forgotten how much you have to step on the right rudder pedal.

Was a lot of fun, and I learned a lot. We are doing slow flight next so that should be fun. I remember from before, power on stalls were the things that I had trouble with. Not sure when we will get to those though. Also, Charleston is an awesome place to fly. 2 minutes after takeoff, we are over the beach. Beeeeaaatifull!

Awesome man!

172s need a bunch more right rudder than 152s. There's about 60-80 more HP than them.

Nothing like Taking off and saying "Charleston Exec Traffic, Cessna xxx departing south to the beach" Then a minute later "Charleston Exec Traffic, Cessna xxx is over the beach at 2000 for manuevers!" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Power ons... about your 4th or 5th lesson... Just keep it coordinated and when the stall breaks, just put the nose on the horizon and let the airspeed recover. If a wing falls, pick it up with rudder NOT aileron.

When do you want that book?

Glad to hear you're getting it done, and welcome to the "big iron" lol /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Good luck in training.

WTG, buddy!!! Cool ain't it?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Nice to see you doing something with your life! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

You guys can't imagine how much I was smiling when we took off. It was sorta a "yeah I remember this, this is awesome" moment for me. I eventually got past the stalls. I remember one time flying over my gf's house in Lakeland waiting for her to get home so she could say she saw me flying over (what a geek right?), I was practicing them and a wing dropped and instead of using rudder to recover, I tried using the ailerons. They don't work so well during a stall. I wouldn't say I got into a full spin but it was close and I wasn't as high as I should have been for that kinda thing. I remembered the spin recovery procedure that I had read but not used and obviously I recovered but I got back to the airport and was very very shaken by it. I called my instructor and told him that the next lesson, I didn't care what he had planned, I wanted to work on stalls and spins. In any case, that has been a scary feeling for me ever since. I'll get over it with time. Getting checked in hockey was scary till I had my tailbone broken by a girl, but then it was just embarrassing... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh yeah about the book. You gonna be around you house Friday evening, 6ish?

Was back in the air again on Thursday. We worked on slow flight. I did ok until time to land. We entered the pattern at like a midfield crosswind or something that I haven't ever seen. I turned too steep to downwind and we were too close to the runway. It got all hosed from there. I ended up asking the instructor to take over as I was frazzled after working all day, racing home to shower and then rushing to the airport. I don't think I'll be doing that anymore. Next lesson is stalls. Good times!

This is like my life every day I fly! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Except for the weekends... then it's just wake up and go fly! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Have fun with stalls!

I understand Grabo, except I know what your work is like... It isn't quite the same. I know you are busy though.

Flew again Saturday AM. I almost canceled because I was tired from watching the FSU/UM game (F Miami!)

We did stalls. The first one I did was pretty bad but I got much better after that one. I'm not good at getting the trim right and that is a huge help if you can get it. Every time I adjust the throttle it seems that I get trimmed and then I notice I am climbing and the rpm has crept up a hundred RPM or so. Whatever, I'll get it. I am feeling comfortable just flying though. Dang is it great to be back up in the air. I waited too long.

After practicing stalls for a bit, clouds moved in and covered the airport. We eneded up with actual IMC to fly back tot he airport. Did the ILS into JZI. Ok. I didn't do the ILS. I did as told but it was so cool. Follow the needle and then POOF, there is the runway. Way cool. I can't wait to get better at flying and get into IFR stuff. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I get on shift work here in a nother 3 weeks and I will be flying much more often. I am sure the learning will come faster then.
