shipping a car in a pax 767

Can you ship a car in the forward cargo hold of a pax 767? I think the 200ER has larger forward hold doors than the 200.

Not the resident 767 expert, but in my experience, I would imagine that much weight in a small area would have to ride on something like a C-5, or a C-17 etc...

I doubt the baggage compartment floor of a 767 can bear that much weight at the respective stations. Anyone know the station limits?

Yes, you can. When i worked the ramp for Delta in ATL we loaded some small sports cars in the front of 767-300ER's. Put the car on a pallet and load the pallet on the plane.

That might depend on the car.

The forward bin is pretty decent sized...you could fit something in there. Would cost you a pretty penny, though.

This might help: http://www.boeing.com/commercial/airports/acaps/767sec2.pdf

Page 40 has details on the size of the forward cargo door. Whatever you ship would have to be somewhat compact in order to fit through the door. Floor loading wouldn't be a problem; we carry LD8 containers with thousands of pounds of cargo up there all the time, taking up less floor area than a car would.

Cars actually don't weigh that much compared to normal freight. I carried a load of SUV's and Mercedes-Benzes from Dubai to Almaty a few weeks back. Granted we had a bunch of regular pallets in the back and I don't remember how full the lower lobes were, but if I recall correctly were only carrying about 60 tons of payload whereas a full load is closer to 115ish. They were driving the cars around inside the airplane to position them correctly, so i guess they weren't doing anything too special in regard to batteries or fuel tanks.

I know smaller cars can be shipped easily in the lower lobe of the 747, you can even load them side ways (car's longitudinal axis perpendicular to the airplane's). That being the case, shipping one in the belly of a 767 shouldn't be too difficult.

Well damn. I was going to say you could probably fit a few smart cars in there; however this guy might pose a little bit of a problem.

And I would actually consider purchasing a smart car if they offered this one as an available model. ;)

Having loaded a fair amount of 747s in my time I would think that driving a car on board would be really hard on the floor system. Every time I've seen a vehicle in a 74 it's been on a long pallet that is loaded perpendicularly then rotated in the door.

Once had a Fed start up a car on a SQ flight; we had to unload it and drain the fuel. The ramp sup just let it run all night and we loaded it on the following days flight. It seemed really odd we were shipping a high end Jap car from the US back to NRT.

Ha, that's more than two (5!)! That's our "crew bag storage area" because it gets surprisingly cramped on a 74 freighter upper deck with 5 guys up there for 18 hours. We had three captains, one f/o (me) and one loadmaster on this flight; after offloading all the payload in Almaty we continued empty to Shanghai.
