Setting up video and audio recording in the aircraft

Cessnaflyer

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Has anyone rigged a Canon XL2 camera so that all they get is the radio/intercom noise in the aircraft?

I was thinking the probably the best way to do this would be to with a split connection from the headphone jack and then an adapter for the microphone jack.

YES, that would be a great thing to do. Below is a video of how.

What do you guys use for a camera? I'd like to purchase a point and shoot camera, but I want to take some video while I'm flying. Any suggestions? If it's possible, I'd like to include the audio into the video without having to buy a recorder.

I would suggest not using a point and shoot unless it has Full HD capabilities. You would be good using on of the HD consumer cameras the newer ones have broadcast quality HD. By Cannon, Sony, and Panasonic.

Audio: Use the same advice that the video gives but instead of putting the audio inn cable into the recorder, put the audio inn cable into the microphone component of a camera.

I did almost the exact same thing as this guy, except I just stick my crappy old 8mm video camera on a tripod, and then bungy chord strap the tripod to the co-pilot seat. I use a Sony digital recorder, plug it into an empty audio port, and let it record.

The trick is going back into Movie Maker and getting the sound to synch with the video. I usually do a three count with my fingers in front of the camera to help me synch it up.

It's quite valuable - I have my own black box now which is great if I want to go back and review something I did wrong, or if something happens down the road and I can sell the video (to fix the plane probably)

I bought a digital video recorder and will try it that way. Unfortunately the software though doesn't work with Win 7 so I'll have to use it on an old XP laptop. Hopefully that will work.

FAA should make an NPRM for something like this for an airliner cockpit....
