Septoplasty

Hi, I have a question. I am to start my flying(ground and flying) training very soon. I have cleared Indian DGCA Class-II and all tests except septal deviation in Class-I. So how mandatory is it to have the septal deviation corrected?

My reasons for the question are:

1. I have been a state level basketball player for about 8 years and have ran a lot. No breathing issues what so ever. No asthma, no sinus problems.

2. I have done some microlight flying, during which I experienced no breathing problems(max flt. alt reached: 4000ft a.g.l on a city located at a hill station)

3. The doc who is supposed to perform the procedure is a very renowned doc and has about 25+ yrs of experience in doing the procedure, but he suggests that the procedure is absolutely not needed, and I shall confirm with the authorities(the DGCA who will issue the clearance certf.) whether it is absolutely neccessary/mandatory even the individual has no medical complaints. I shall talk to the officials at DGCA but...

More than any other reasons of my own, the fact that the doc who will perform the op. is himself giving me a advice to reconsider is something that has confused me. Few of my friends who underwent this procedure had problems in the long run i.e. after a year or so they had some nasal itching and constant headache, easily prone to allergies etc etc. I would be very glad and thankful to hear from the experts here to know whether a deviated septum would cause any serious trouble while flying commercial jets or is it just a precautionary measure???

well deviation is kinda severe and I would like to know the post-operative effects. Also, if its severe its a temporary DQ in India.

Its fine if I have to bear with pain and trouble for a month but over the long it should not cause any trouble. Some of my friends who had this surgery done had to redo the procedure for some cause. This is what I am more worried about.

If there is severe obstruction, you can get sinus pain which is incapacitating.

As far as the effects of the procedure, it will depend on how experienced and skilled the surgeon is and what he needs to do.
