Self Study books

s***posting with decency. trolling with integrity.
Hello JC'ers !

Been a while since I posted on here. Masters degree and work is keeping me busy!!

I am going to start my flying this summer hopefully! But with classes going slow - I could catch up on my reading for the private. I was wondering what books you guys would recommend so that I could get the ground school stuff out of the way. Interactive CD's are a plus.

Any help and feedback would be extremely helpful!

Cheers
Sunny

All available from faa.gov for free as pdf:

The Airplane Flying Handbook
The Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge
The FAR/AIM (an ASA one will give you a study guide for whatever rating you're working on)
Aviation Weather
Aviation Weather Services

Jeppesen books are also pretty good.

+1 on the jeppesen stuff. It's all the FAA books condensed into one. But the Jep books are more for a classroom enviroment. So if thats your style, then go Jep.

The King ppl dvd course will get you through it, but it's about as boring as it gets and Martha isn't much to look at. I also used the Jeppesen Test prep book.

Personally, I never much cared for the Jep products. It's a lot like a textbook and I never much cared for that style of learning. I instructed at a Cessna Pilot Center for awhile and we used those kind DVD's I think. They, also, were extremely boring. I've heard good things about the Machado books but personally think the FAA books you can download for free are the best materials. I ended up buying the book versions of most of them for the ease of use, but to do it again I'd probably just fire up the printer and go at it.

It all comes down to personal preference and how you learn the best. There's a product setup for most people's learning styles. The faa pubs were best for me.

I liked the Cessna Pilot Center DVDs for use in conjuntion with flight training. The King DVDs are good for passing the written; not much else.

I have always used the Gleim products. Their practice CD's for the computer is a great software. You can set it to mimic laser grade or whatever your testing format is going to be, so you are used to the look of the test.
