Self-Defense Training

So the TSA just said we need to have some basic self defense training, and here in the training department we are wondering how other airlines do it. I am just looking to see how your airline runs things i.e. video, hands-on, or the TSA Crew-Member Training. Any help you guys have is appreciated.

We do.

Not going to go into details, but overall its a pretty good laugh. When the whole classroom is doing it, it looks like a chorus line or something.

As is often the case with TSA inspired things. Great idea, but failure in proper application.

Much like "you must inspect the exterior panels of the aircraft...except for some, they're gross"

Yeah. Basically we got a memo that said, "Do It. Include basic self defense. Have fun."

Yeah, we do it here, too. Can't go into specifics, but honestly I think it teaches you just enough to where you think you know something.....then someone that knows more beats you to a pulp.

This stuff isn't SSI. The stuff I've seen at the airline is an extremely watered down version of this:

It's considered SSI at my carrier. Even has the little boxes on the bottom of all the training pages. Then again, we have an overinflated sense of self-importance.

At Colgan we have to inspect the "gross" ones or get violated...again.

We did, then people complained and now we don't.

In all honesty, the rest of the airplane is pretty nasty too. None of our planes have been deiced for probably going on 6 months and they're all still sticky.

Ya cain't touch this!

There's a couple of guys from atlanta, The Bob and Bob Show, that do ours. One is a retired SWAT guy and the other is an Airtran pilot. They do a one day course that starts pretty good but in the afternoon it just consists of bob telling you how many ways he can kill you. If you want serious self defence training, look into Krav Maga. They teach these methods in NM, so I've heard...

Can your Tiger Crane Style beat my Eagle Claw Style?
