Selecting The Right School for YOU

Was just wondering if there is a forum that discusses, in one area, pros cons and general differences of flight schools. If not, I hope that we can start one. I have read many things about some flights schools, and noticed one thing they all had in common. "PFT" and "PYD" (pay your dues). These are nothing more than cliches brought on by the union/management struggle. I am sure most people could care less about these struggles..students are neither union nor management during training. All a student wants is the most value for there buck.

I'd almost steer clear of one forum that lists pros and cons of flight schools. It tends to get really down and dirty around here sometimes even with the schools split into their own forums.

I was just reading the Gulfstream Story.....that was heated. I think I will just do it the old fashioned way and select a college or university with a flight program..become an instructor..and pray that we haven't tossed the aircraft into the scrap heaps and started beaming our molecules all over the place

I missed the whole Gulfstream thing (by scarce minutes aparently), but it looks like that was a good thing......

Please don't be discouraged by that post, you are welcome to ask your questions here at jetcareers. Oh and welcome to the fourms

Not at all discouraged...still in search mode for different schools and love to hear all opinions. Most people starting out are single or no kids.....I have a mrs. and 4 small ones to look after, but this is a dream of mine and the timing is right. Helps that the mrs. is behind me on this and we are very cautious of where I receive my training

The hell with that! I don't want Bill Gates' software to crash while my molecules are between where I'm leaving and where I want to get!

I think that for a long time, we're going to be using airplanes to get where we want to get as quickly as possible.

I think that you've got one of the most important things down. I'm one of those single guys, and I don't have to worry about my cats complaining if they're eating cat food -- and they might even like it if I am, too!

The pros and cons of the academy route versus the local FBO have been debated here quite a bit. I gave a lot of thought, when I got laid off back in late 2002, to going down to an academy and getting all of my ratings done quickly.

I decided against that because I don't think there's any need to hurry. First of all, I've got a long way to go before I'm 60. Second, with the industry in its current situation, and thousands of guys with seniority numbers out on the street, there are a lot of people who need to get rehired before it's my turn.

So I do my training slowly but surely, will build time the same way, and when it's time, I'll be ready.

Your mileage may vary, depending on a wide range of factors. Best wishes whichever route you decide to go.

I'll throw in my current situation into the mix. I am 28, married with two small boys. I am going to attend a college to attain an aviation degree. It's not a 4 year school, when I am done, I will be a commercially rated pilot with an Applied Science degree. Being a two year degree, I will most likely be at a disadvantage being compared with 4 year degree holding individual. I arrived at this decision with much trepidation. The cost of schooling would pay for a fully loaded "E" class. I am self employed, and while I attended school, I am able to maintain my business. Most of the opinions of Unions are based on an individuals experiences. I have worked in a Union shop (different field though) with great dismay. They serve their purpose, but are in need of some reform. All in all, they will protect the majority, which is the right thing to do. If every thing goes as planned for me, I project at best that I could be working for a major airline by the time I am 40. Twelve years is a daunting task at 28 years of age. My wife resparked a dormant dream of mine during a dinner discussing what are our long term goals should be. She has so far fully backed me in this venture. She knows that relocating, at least on my part, will be part of the deal. I am scared too say the least, but I am fully committed to do what it takes. I have been reading this forum, and alot of other industry related materials ad nauseam. I'll add this for Doug, I have been a small business owner for some time, and the aviation field would provide me a much needed guaranteed paycheck! Owning your own business is not all it's cracked up to be! Don't be discouraged, the recent clarity in my life I owe gratitude towards someone else. With everything else being said, my only hope is that this industry can move on from 9-11. Not forget, but forge on ahead.
