US Airways will hire 500 flight attendants and pilots next year as it grows international routes and replaces retiring workers.
The Tempe, Ariz.-based airline (NYSE: LCC) said Monday that some of the positions will be filled by furloughed flight crew. The hiring plans calls for 420 flight attendants and 80 pilots to be hired and flying by July.
“This is great news for our work force and the communities we serve,” US Airways Group President Scott Kirby said in a news release. “We look forward to welcoming our colleagues back to US Airways, and bringing new crew members onto the team.”
All flight attendants will be taken off furlough, but 100 pilots will remain furloughed. It will bring US Airways' total number of pilots to 4,970 and flight attendants to 7,300, according to the airline.
US Airways is the region's fifth-busiest airline according to the South Florida Business Journal's Book of Lists, operating out of Miami International Airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Palm Beach International Airport.

USAir has been trying to get the furloughed flight attendants (from as early as 2001) back to work for the last 3 months. There were 430 of them and all have been called back. It appears that all of them did not return. They then tried to get active flight attendants to transfer into CLT from other bases. They still didn't get enough. Now they are going to hire FA's into CLT for the first time since the 90's. This should not be a surprise to them.
