Holy crap, reminds me of Libya when the new and pretty Tripoli airport was destroyed along with a substantial amount of aircraft, including multiple Afriqyah A330s. Now they're back to using the old WWII era field ever since. Except, that fighting only destroyed Libyan-registered jets. With Ukrainian and Saudi companies involved here, I'm guessing KRT is getting the axe for the foreseeable future.

I actually hadn't read of any instability in the KRT region, so I was surprised by this. I thought the fighting was mostly in remote areas or near borders, not smack dab in the middle of the urban metropolis of Khartoum. Yikes. I hope no civilians were killed or wounded.

On a side note, I feel for the SkyUp crews. Their own country is invaded, yet much of the flying they ended up with was in places like this. No job for the weak flying for them right now.
 
I had to check, it was a different SkyUp 737-800 that was able to make a successful departure from Kyiv a month back. UR-SQP there; SkyUp is based in Kyiv.

Sudan death toll rises to 56 as fierce fighting rages in Khartoum

The video in this article is nuts, Migs firing ordinance on city streets, tanks running over cars, people in the KRT airport huddled on the ground...really gives a sense that crap really hit the fan suddenly and hard. About 60 civilians killed so far.

Though one Saudia A330 was destroyed doing a RUH-KRT-RUH flight, another was at 4,000ft on right base on for an approach into KRT when the fighting broke out inbound from JED and high-tailed it out of there. Luckily, this appears to have been the only airline anywhere inbound near the city at the time (an Ethiopian 737MAX and a FlyaDeal A320NEO were also inbound and diverted much further away). The flight was running late, had they got in a few minutes earlier, who knows what would have happened. The last departure happened about 45 minutes before the fighting started in the area, and it appears that the destroyed Saudia A330 was the only aircraft on the ground that wasn't a Sudanese carrier or operating on behalf of Sudanese carriers, but many Middle Eastern and African carriers do serve KRT as do European cargo carriers, though mostly in the middle of the night as is common for some reason in that region.

Imagine having the airport in sight then seeing all the explosions. I also read that the airport shelling killed 2 people on the "tarmac", and the Saudia A330 has all the slides popped and was one of the only flights close to boarding. Apparently, Saudia had the passengers and crew escorted to the Saudi embassy where they are being sheltered for now. Plenty of other planes are damaged too, as the UN and the military both reported losses and KRT is one of the big bases in the region for UN aircraft that deliver food, aid, and medical care all around East Africa. Bad situation for those dependant on those aircraft.

Except the An-225 was mostly (almost exclusively, really) used for global humanitarian work and it being destroyed didn't save any lives, only prevented Antonov from helping save lives after disasters. Aircraft like that and these crippled UN planes in Sudan don't just grow on trees. It is very realistic to think that the closure of KRT and the surrounding airspace (not to mention the fact that many UN-sponsored agencies are telling staff to GTFO Sudan and abandon the humanitarian missions as workers have already been killed in the crossfire) + the damage to the UN fleet which frequently supports the survival of those in the war-torn Darfur region is going to directly lead to hardship and possibly death. It is already widely reported that tribal militia basically raided the UN supplies once the staff left so the locals will get none of it.

Saudia can live without an A330, SkyUp is going to really suffer from this as Sudan was one of the nations that offered constant work for them (that is another SkyUp 738 parked next to the burning one in the pics) after Ukraine was invaded. Much of that work was shuttling UN staff who are now jumping ship. Only so many SkyUp planes made it out of Ukraine in time, and I'd assume most of us want the best for Ukrainian airline staff.

Oh speaking of good guys, it's kinda complicated as I don't think either side is good. There was a coup a few years ago, the military and a paramilitary force (which was formed to attack the tribal militias raiding UN aid ironically in Darfur) worked together to take down a corrupt government...but now it is time to form an actual government and the thought of either side not flexing their uniforms and guns as a means of control has led to this. There is speculation that both sides are actually working together (despite killing each other) to try and spread fear and panic and make the public think the military needs to stay in control for "safety".

And we complain about politics in the US. Lol.

Agreed, by like everyone on earth, ever. But these airplanes (at least some of them + the An-225) were about saving human lives lol.

Speaking of, confirmed one of the aircraft destroyed was a UN ERJ-135 known locally as the "Darfur Shuttle" used for food aid + medical staff who were based in KRT. It was the largest passenger plane used exclusively by the UN in the region (they also charter aircraft like the SkyUp 737s), the rest are cargo planes like An-26s and IL-76s and some choppers and smaller props.

That will not buff out lol. I just find so much irony in the very agency that was formed to defend Darfur ultimately forcing the UN away from being able to help the region. Power grabs make people do strange, strange things. Up until this point, both sides were "heroes of the people" and not involved in any kind of attack on the population. I read that a huge portion of the aid food provided in the region came from Ukraine in the first place, so there were already shortages. Now there is no UN assistance period.

The ASN database links to a FlightAware page that lists the registration as "ZS-KLA" but I am unsure that is correct (FlightAware data is not perfect).

I found two E135s operated by the UN (both with Kenyan "5Y" registrations) that started off life with Chautauqua.

Interesting, I'd assumed they flew for SA Airlink or one of its subsidiaries. But the E135s, like most quickly discarded Western jets, are actually very popular in sub-Sahara Africa. Robust, ground handling requires little equipment, and are largely operated on routes where 30ish seats is plenty. Without looking it up, maybe Fly540 owned/operated it. Always been very interested in African and Middle Eastern aviation, too bad airport photography is illegal in so much of that region because they're worried about attacks like this lol.

I departed JFK (PF mind you) a few mins before DJT arrived in NY for his (whatever it was) a couple weeks ago. There were approx 10000 emergency vehicles lining every avenue of approach to the terminal, and as I was doing my walk around, there were 3+ news type helos hovering seemingly in formation directly above the terminal/ramp, at maybe 2-3000 ft (they were high up for helicopters). As we were approaching the active, I wondered if this would be what we saw as we started rolling down the runway.
