Scenic Airlines

I have heard several people talk about Scenic Airlines in many different threads on this board.
From what I have gathered there a sightseeing airline. (Hopefully not one in the same that routinely end up on the floor of the Grand Canyon.)
Okay some questions? Do they have a website? I tried scenicairlines.com and scenicair or scenic-air.com but nothing ever comes up?
Second what kind of aircraft do they operate? What are there hiring minimums.
They sound like a great way to build PIC time fast toward the regionals/majors.
I might look into them maybe after instructing for a time if not competitive for regionals an such as a way to look more attractive on a resume...any info one could give would be helpful.

Thanks for the very informative link. Any former or current Scenic pilots on this board and want to post there advice/opinion bout the company.
Lastly their hiring process is it easy hard what?

From what I've heard, their hiring is hit or miss. I think pscraig knows some guys from the time he spent instructing in Vegas, and I THINK Bill (Amber's Bill) used to fly for Scenic a while back.

Don't apply unless you have the mins or your file will go to the garbage.If you get on with the mins chances are you will upgrade at 1500 hrs.Most people move on because the time is really not that valuable.I have a friend who left at 1200 hrs to Ameriflight and upgraded in 4 months to the 99.Single pilot freight time looks better to the majors.Good luck

Most people I know that flew for Scenic loved it. It's hot, bumpy, lots of hand flying for very little money. But you build time quickly. As noted above it's a place you work for a while and move on. The training is good however, and you get jumpseat priveleges on other airlines. It's a good outfit.

I also saw they have insurance, too. Something that you don't get as an indepedent contractor/CFI. I've actually thought a lot about sending in my resume once I get the mins.

Speaking of that, I had the pleasure of explaining to my parents why after five years at Riddle and landing my second job how I needed to borrow some cash to go see the doctor about a sinus infection.

Health insurance is certainly important!

Yup, Bill flew for scenic for about a year back in 1994/95. He left Scenic for Eagle in May of 1995. He had a very positive experience there. The pay wasn't great , but it built him some hours and he moved on. There were guys there who pretty much made a life of it though, some for QOL reasons, (didn't want to leave Vegas), and others just liked the flying and had no desire to go airline.

It obviously has been a while, and the way things were then may or may not be the way there are now, but he was very happy with the experience. He was able to quasi-commute, America West offered jumpseats to Scenic guys so he came home to Chicago a lot. His girlfriend (at the time) was here (bitch, but that's another story), as was his family, but he was able to get home quite frequently.

Here he is in the right seat of a Twin Otter:

Good way to build turbine time and they know that and pay according. They fly the "twotter" and the 1900 into a few subsidized routes out of north town. 15 hr days at $12.50 flying time and $6.25 sitting time. trainging contracts prorated $7000 for the otter meaning you get hired and leave in one month you will pay around $6000 after six months $0. If your single (no family or other commitment), want the vegas night life, and build time this is a good way to go. there are other canyon operators such as Grand Canyon Airlines(Otter) out of KGCN and American Aviaiton C-207,C-206 out of page with Westwind with C-208 both out of KPGA, Than King out of Henderson using C-402.

He was dating his best friend's sister. Turns out she couldn't deal with the 'pilot's wife life' and him being away all the time. She found herself a new boyfriend, once the new relationship was secure she sent Bill packing. A very cruel, heartless thing to do to a nice guy like Bill.

He's doing good. Gaining weight like a trooper and is now only up to eat once in the night. He's finally starting to fit in his 0-3 month clothes!

Glad to hear that!!!! My daughter was early by 3 weeks and once I realized how big she was getting, it put a big Kool-Aid smile on my face!!!

Scenic Airlines is currently accepting applications from pilots with the following qualifications:

DHC-6-300 Captain:

* Airline Transport Pilot
* Multi-Engine Land
* Airplane
* Current First Class Medical
* 2500 TT
* 1000 PIC
* 500 ME Turbo-Prop PIC
* DHC-6-300 experience preferred
* IFR current

DHC-6-300 First Officer:

* Commercial Pilot
* Multi-Engine Land
* Instrument
* Airplane
* Current First Class Medical
* 600 TT
* 400 PIC
* 50 ME
* IFR current
* At least 21 years of age

He started at 3lbs 9oz, and at last check (2 weeks ago) was up to 6 lbs 13 oz. So he's over 7 lbs now and doing great.

But back to Scenic, I mentioned this thread to Bill just now and he said too that he was happy working for Scenic from an operations standpoint. They had a top-notch operation, and great, well-maintained equipment. He really has no complaints about his time there. Again, this was 10 years ago. Don't know if it's the same now as it was then.

Those are really good mins. Hopefully there still hiring when I get done with ATP next summer. Good alternate if can't get an instructor position anywhere.
It's turbine time they have insurance and jumpseat privilages. Someone mentioned HP anyone know if they WN jumpseat privilages?

-Matthew

I think they have jumpseat with HP because of the "supplemental carrier" stuff. They probably use HP's reservation system, and the jump seat is part of the deal. I wouldn't hold my breathe on WN.

Another good thing is they fly a lot.I was talking to a captian there and he said between 600-800 hrs a year.

I was hired there a while ago but did not take the job (another opportunity came up). I have a couple friends there and some who have moved on, all seemed to have like it. I would take it as a substitute to unstructing maybe. Interview was easy, study the ATP, and there is a basic sim ride.
