Inventor of Ramen noodles dies

Momofuku Ando, 96, came up with product to ease post-World War II food shortages.

| Momofuku Ando, the Japanese inventor of instant noodles — a dish that has sustained American college students for decades — has died. He was 96.

Nissin Food Products Co., the company Ando founded, said on its Web site that he died Friday after suffering a heart attack.

Born in Taiwan, Ando founded his company in 1948 from a humble family operation.

Faced with food shortages in post-World War II Japan, Ando thought a quality, convenient noodle product would help feed the masses.

In 1958, his ''Chicken Ramen'' — the first instant noodle — was introduced after many trials. Following its success, the company added other products, such as the ''Cup Noodle'' in 1971.

''The Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum'' opened in 1999 in Ikeda City in western Japan to commemorate his inventions.

Ando gave a speech at the company's New Year ceremony and enjoyed Chicken Ramen for lunch with Nissin employees on Thursday before falling ill, Japan's largest daily newspaper Yomiuri reported

They were talking about this on the radio this morning on the way to the airport. I still every now and then get a craving for the 'beef flavor'.

Just hope he ate his product, a lot.

then again.......

I thought pengy posted this in the lav over the weekend? didn't he? or was that another "cup o noodles" guy?

I'd rather pull out my credit card, get in debt and pay 1229043850298% interest on decent food than eating Ramen. It's nasty.

I still haven't been brave enough or stupid enough (depending on who you ask) to make the plunge into the world of credit cards so although sometimes it feels like I'm going to die to have to eat those nasty things, it's cheap and sometimes cheap is all that matters!

be careful with that! you'll need credit cards to build up your credit and if you don't have any.. good luck with getting some of those major purchases like cars & homes...

it's good to start building your credit early, it's bad to take it forgranted and overspend! :)

Well I have a good credit rating and I'm currently in my second year of payments on a brand new car I had financed. I'm doing very well so far and I think I'm a little scared to get one because I saw how hard of a time my mother had with them. She got herself in tons of trouble. I'm in school right now, paying cash, until work reimburses me for it at the end of each semester, I have a new car I'm paying on, I get my rent and all my bills paid, and still have enough left over to have some fun so I just don't yet feel the need. But I have been considering it lately for extreme emergencies and things of that nature. I just haven't decided.

I looked in the Lav first and didnt see it unless it got down a few pages. I put in General as it was aviation related. Name a pilot that hasnt eaten the product?
