Yes- Another RVSM thread...

I was reading under FARs about equipment requirements for RVSM, and I came across the portion in the AIM about it.. (4-6-8) under controller phraseology.

So does this mean, that to operate in RVSM you need to following 3 things?

1) 2 independent Altitude measuring systems

2) An Autopilot with an Altitude hold function that meets criteria for +/- 100ft

3) Altitude Alerter(s) for altitude deviations.

Is that right people?

For some reason the only thing that keeps popping in my head is that Above FL240 you must have DME.... wasn't thinking about the above?..

Insight?

I read that- "E" states that above FL240 you must have DME, which is what i was thinking all alone, so in addition to DME....

Im curious as to what else and where it says you must have certain RVSM equipment...?

Found it- it says:

The aircraft must be equipped with two operational independent altitude measurement systems.

The aircraft must be equipped with at least one automatic altitude control system that control the aircraft altitude with a tolerance band of +/- 65 feet about an acquired altitude when the aircraft is operated in straight and level flight under non turbulent, gust conditions. or 130ft tolerance if aircraft certificated before april 9 of 1997.

The aircraft must be equipped with an altitude alert system- 300ft tolerance for aircraft certified before april 9, 1997 and 200ft for aircraft certified after april 9, 1997.

So i was correct- no where in 91.207 E was this information... :)

Misunderstood the question. Thought you were trying to remember where the DME requirement was.

The aircraft also has to have a marked RVSM protected area in regards to the static ports. Hence you usually see a large orange box on the outside of the aircraft around the static area. If any scratches, dents, or dings in that area around the static port and MX is required. At least that is what was explained to me? I could be wrong.

I don't know if that is a requirement still (or ever was one). None of our CRJs have the box around the static ports.

I think what he is in relation to is the skin requirements around the static port- there is a certain "wrinkle" allowance in the skin around the pitot tube and static ports before RVSM tolerances are unacceptable.

As far as "things" you need to operate in RVSM, an LOA is one of them. Not necessarily mechanical, but without it, you've got some fancy altimetry equipment that does you no good.

Where did you find this information? I'd like to know where it is for future reference.

There no special markings on the 727 pitot/static system for RVSM...

I have saw it on DC-9/MD-80s, A320s, and some others. It is on the P.180. I don't know why some planes have it and some don't?
