Russian Altimeter

I recently purchased a Russian Altimeter on EBAY for a great price (I am making a shadow box with some old airplane stuff in it). Could anybody give me some info on this thing. Here is what I have to work with:

Outer ring measures from 0-8
Inner ring measures from 4-11 (starting at the six o'clock position)
Behind the needle, it reads "x100KM/4"
The next line reads "CKOPOCTb"
The back has a pair of wings, with an "n" under it.
The top port has an A by it, and the bottom has a C by it.

Can anybody make heads or tails out of any of this? I don't know what kind of airplane it is off of. This is a really neat piece, but I don't know how to get some more info on it.

Sounds like airspeed indicator to me.
Ckopoct = Speed
x100Km/4 = x100 km per hour
The ports on the back - C - static, A - not sure what they use for ram
Not really sure how to read the two rings though.
 
If its an airspeed indicator the rings are probably to set in a OAT value to get a TAS, like a slide rule? Can you move the rings?

I took a semester of Russian (it sucked) but the "CKOPOCTb" looks like a word that is (hopefully) pronounced "Cshkoroctbli"


I did a google for russion english translator and entered it at http://www.rustran.com/odr.php4?q=2&word=CKOPOCTb&x=108&y=20 and got:
Без перевода.

which transliterates to "Vez Nerovoda" which when I posted that into the FAA website and did a search I got "CKOPOCTb" (just kidding on the FAA part).

Actually, I put "Vez Nerovoda" back in the original russion->english translator and got "Without Translation"

Checked out both CKOPOCTb and Без перевода on a different site and got "no results" and "without translation" again.


So an initial guess is that CKOPOCTb is an abbreviation/acronmyn and not a word. (although the trailing 'b' I 'remember' being a modifier on a word--like the romance language gender modifiers)

The x100KM/4, however looks like a straighforward conversion factor made for ease of use. So "4" x 100KM/4 would 400KM/4 = 100KM = roughly--the moon (assuming KM is Kilometers).

You're transliterations a little off, close, but, literally:
Без перевода = "Bez Perevoda" = "Without a translation."

Ckopoct (prononunced skorost) is speed. Vez Nerevoda sounds like "Bez perewoda" which is "without translation", literally.

400 km/h is about 220 knots (4 is very similar to the russian letter for 'ch', for 'chas' = 'hour')

Looking at the other posts, the "airspeed indicator" solution looks like the likely one.

Curious how this unfolds--its a fun puzzle.

Update: on the outer/vs inner rings, could they be analgous to KPH vs MPH? scales on an American ASI?

I suppose it could be an airspeed indicator.............Neither the me nor the seller knew exactly what it was. It just looked cool (and was $5)

The "A" is not an "A" but the equivalent (sorta) of our letter "D"


On the face, what is interesting is how close the scales are between the inner and outer rings.

Can't wait to see some other thoughts.

The fact it had two ports on the back would be your first clue that it was not an altimeter ;)

...and I only speak french in russian :beer:

Sounds like you know from hence you speak. I guess it helps if your last name ends in rov...
