thanks for the advice expilot. I think for the past month I've been trying to tell myself that everything would work out, however in the back of my mind I'm thinking. 40K in debt, away from friends & family, and not being able to buy little things like concert tickets etc.

i've done this crap for 4 years on the C5 and I'm done. the woman hates the 2 week trips that we do now, so I've got 30 grand to go spend on some quality education.

believe it or not but you are probably the one to change my mind about all of this.

so thanks again.

Looks like Expilot was a one day, one thread, wonder. He reminds me exactly of Skyhigh over at APC.

Anyhow, I think it's good for newbs to see what can happen in an aviation career. It's exactly the opposite of what the big academy/flight university marketing is telling ya. Not that this is what WILL happen to you, but it's what COULD happen. I just think it's good people are aware of the worst case scenario.

1,500 hours as CFI/Chief Flight Instructor
1,000 hours flying night freight
1,000 hours turbine corporate/charter with ATP turbine type.
s/e and m/e seaplane time, glider time,

At the time (1982-1989), the majors were furloughing.

At that time, just to put the record straight, Delta, American, USAir/Piedmont, Northwest and United were adding more pilots to their respective seniority lists than they ever had before. Not sure what he is talking about. USAir had a small furlough in 1989 (followed by a bigger one in 1991), but the "majors" didn't start furloughing until the mid-90's.

I don't even know where to start. I love aviation, and have as long as I can remember. After reading each one of these posts, I've "seen the light" so-to-speak. I want aviation to be something fun, and that I ENJOY doing. Notice I didn't just say "flying". I don't want the JOB of doing something that I love. I want to have fun doing what I love. Of course I'm going to go through and get my ratings...in due time. Definitely going to get my PPL and IR without hesitation. That way I can fly when I have the time/money still. The rest though, I think is going to come with time now. I love the thought of possibly being at the controls of something like a Citation. One day, who knows. I guess it's true though...some people get so hooked on the "smoke blowing" and they become so immune to it, that they don't get to see both sides of the fence, and the reality that lies therein. In the end, all that matters is that you make the decision to make yourself happy...whatever that may be. It's all about the journey...not so much the destination. Your perception and goals of flying and aviaiton is going to be what you make of it. :D...To each his own...

Mabye he didn't network?

I appreciate hearing both sides of the story, and I do feel bad for his comrades with wings forever folded, but posting for a day and then disappearing smacks of: troll.

I can see his perspective. Either you have 120K in debt or there is a matching hole in you're parents bank account. I've been out in the work place two years. and minimum payments and living in sub-adiquate apartments so far to show for it. I went the dispatch/ ATC route. flying didn't work out for me earlie on. thankfully when i hit 50 i'll have it all paid off :rawk:

(sry about resurecting the post)
