Perusing Amazon with the need to burn a gift certificate, I came across Rod Machado's Private Pilot Handbook and Instrument Pilot's Survival Manual.

I know he worked with MS on the flight instruction stuff and it was pretty good in the sim, but I don't know about the books. Are they worth having? Are they suitable replacements for the standard PPH that everyone recommends?

Just wondering if they're worth it.

I think they are. I'm not sure if they are really a replacement for the standard (dry) material, but they are a valuable supplement since they explain things in a different way.

The one warning is this. Machado is funny. And, if you've read his column in AOPA Pilot of Flight Training, you know that his sense of humor is s bit skewed. I enjoy it and think it help learning, but the style is definitely not for everyone.

I like his books they don't go into the same level of detail as jeppesen but at least you can stand reading them for more then a couple hours on end.
