RLA petition

Would you say being ALPA is in your best interest as an ExpressJet pilot? Would you look at it differently if your seniority were universal?

I still don't think you understand this. Republic wouldn't have one seniority list. They'd have 10 or more. One for each domicile. And each domicile would have it's own contract. So, The Rev could go to the DCA 170 pilots and ask what they would be willing to fly for and then go to the PHL domicile and say that if you don't fly for less than that, all of the 170s would be going to DCA (without the pilots) and PHL would be closing.

No thanks.

That's simply not going to happen.

Why not? The only protection you have from that NOT happening right now is the class and craft definition under the RLA. It happens all the time for bargaining units under the NLRA. Why do you think FedEx has been complaining to the courts that it is unfair for them that their drivers are treated as airline employees (instead of like at UPS where they are considered truck drivers). There are huge costs advantages for corporations when they can whipsaw the labor between domiciles or work group locations.

Because we wouldn't let it happen. We (and I mean we as in airline pilots who don't want current RLA language in force) are clearly the ones who are doing the most pushing for change and we would have to play a big role in the change. I get what you mean but everybody needs to just calm down and breath. We are pushing for the reform that we want. If it doesn't happen in our lifetime, it doesn't happen. But to say that we will just become the equivalent of NLRA if the RLA were completely dismantled is just plain old fear. There's a good reason we are not in the NLRA but it doesn't mean the RLA works for us. Why can't there be a 3rd Act? Plays have em!

Why can't there be a third act?

First, because there are gramatical mistakes in the petition. How does anybody expect to be taken seriously if they can't proof read their petition?

Second, what would the new law be? Has anybody drafted any proposals? Considered how they'd be adopted?

Third, if there aren't any proposals, then what amendments would be made to the NLRA? As I said to Jimmy earlier in the thread, I think there would need to be amendments due to the nature of how this job functions, but if that didn't happen, what would the result be?

I'm all for changing laws to our advantage, but quite frankly we don't know what we're screwing with when it comes to this stuff. I'm not saying the RLA is exactly advantageous to pilot groups, but I AM saying that things could be MUCH, MUCH worse.

I really don't like agency shop. As a fee citizen, I should be able to choose if I want to participate in the union.

That's part of the reason I'm a JetBlue. :)

An agency shop allows you to do just that; you only pay what it costs to administer the contract, and nothing else. Otherwise you'd be a free rider.

He thinks, incorrectly, that JetBlue pilots will be at a disadvantage in a merger due to the lack of a union.

Ah, I was more curious about his use of THE merger vs A merger...Someone recently told me of a little schoolhouse rumor so it sparked my curiosity.

And on that note, I agree with his statement.

Are you going to quit when they get a union on property?

If we have an option to be grandfathered out of the union, I'll take that. Otherwise, no, I'll join the union. I didn't say it was a deal breaker. I just prefer to be non union.

I don't harbor any contempt for you union types, but you guys sure do for anti-union types. It's very interesting.

You don't have to be in the union. You can be an agency fees payer and not be in the union.

Thanks!

Because being union helped TWA...AirTran...etc.

Right?

If you think that AirTran wouldn't have done worse without ALPA, then you're delusional. We may have gotten screwed, but the severe ass raping would have been exponentially worse without union protection. But don't worry, you'll find out soon enough for yourself if you don't get a union on the property before the merger.

Who knows what will happen? I prefer to be non union, and I went to a non union carrier. I'm willing to accept any consequences, if there turn out to be consequences.
