RIP STS-51L Challenger crew

Wow, 22 years since Challenger!

I was in 5th grade, and they brought us all to a TV to watch the coverage.

Yea, I was actually home sick from school that day. I ran outside and looked up into the Chicago sky for any remnants of the disaster. Learned something that day! Never forget it.

OK...now I feel old.... :(

:yeahthat:

I was finishing an equipment installation job with a small crew in Plant City, Florida. We were working second shift doing some touch-up detail work since the plant was operational. Woke up to the news, walked out on the hotel balconey, and could see the Y-cloud off on the horizon.

:(

Wow! It has been a long time. RIP and may they crew members be happy wherever they are.

I spent some time with Joe Allen. He was a crew member of two shuttle rides. His ships were the Challenger and the Columbia.

Well, if it makes y'all feel any better, Bill was a senior in high school at the time! :laff: (Bet he never thought then that he'd end up marrying a girl who was in 5th grade the year he graduated high school!)

And if it'll make you feel any older, there's a lot of folks on this board who probably weren't even born yet on that date!

My future wife is in the 5th grade now!! :buck:

For that matter, don't forget Apollo 1, which caught fire on the pad during a plugs-out test on Jan. 27. Kind of a weird coincidence that, while years apart, the three biggest disasters in NASA's history all occurred within 6 days of each other. (Apollo 1 -Jan. 27, Challenger - Jan. 28, Columbia - Feb. 1)

There's a memorial site for all three accidents on the NASA page:
