Riding in the back

Any of you folks commuting in uniform ever feel compelled to say something to your neighbors when they try to sneakily use their phones or other electronic toys below 10k? I feel like I should say something, but then I'm usually riding on my own airline and it seems like an unnecessary (though minor)confrontation most of the time. Like, it's not worth the effort.

It does rub me the wrong way that adults are so selfish and lacking any kind of patience that they have to disrespect the cabin crew.

Who here says something in this situation?

Agreed, but I usually let it go. What really bothers me is when people have their dirty shoes up on the bulkheads and such. I want to say "how would you feel if I did that in your car?" People feel like they don't have to treat things well since they are paying for it. Amazing though how rude adults can be, particularly about phone calls. It's terrible these days.

Personally I don't mind...If the FA says something and the passenger is giving them a hard time, I'm available as back-up. Otherwise, whatever.....

I just gotta ask, I understand that the airlines have these rules and formalities they want people to follow, but I have never understood why they still insist people turn their electronics off below 10,000. I thought the possibility of them causing problems was so remote that there really isn't a reason to enforce it.

"I'm not important, just a part of the flight." (or just along for the ride.)

The old man sweater gets put on for the commutes quite a lot (you do have an old man sweater, right?).

That wears off after a bit. ;)

I'll only do so if there's some obvious feminine hygiene product-like behavior (think, escalating) going on or by invitation.

This, I prefer my panties to be unbunched. Let them deal with it...The less potential for opening the can of "what route do you fly" questions the better.

You'd be amazed passengers will do if they are singled out.
I do it all the time. "Sir, you need to fasten your seat belt. Ma'am you need to get off your phone."
Not once has someone given me "sass, attitude or a hard time."

It doesn't cause problems with the aircraft per se. It's more so that if we are going down, I want your full-undivided attention so you can listen to the flight attendants instructions. That and not having a bunch of objects flying around if we decelerate rapidly is a nice touch.

That's what I tell people when they ask me- which they do all the time. I mostly just want to respond: Is your life and/or mind so empty that you have to warmed by the glow of your cell phone's screen constantly?

(This will save your sanity) ;)

I like that idea, although a few of our pilots have taken crap from the CPs office recently for wearing a polar fleece over their uniform while commuting to or from work. I guess this is what happens when hats are no longer part of the uniform and the CPs have nothing else to police.

The other day in EWR we sat on the ground for nearly 5 hours deicing, going to get to get more fuel deicing again... Most passengers had their phones out and I was fine with it... We're not going anywhere, who cares? The FA's didn't even say anything. Other than when we departed the pad the FA's asked people to turn off their devices that we're going to be taking off this time. People complied.

While I have never and will never say anything...it usually infuriates me. Not the person who is just in their own little world and won't comply, but the one who sees the FAs coming, quickly hide it until they pass then turn it back on. The whole time they are looking around making sure they won't get caught. That is the person I would like to punch in the throat. I just grit my teeth and go back to whatever I was doing.

I seem to recall Eagle had an FM-1 (think FOM) procedure for that for extended ground delays. While I realize that nobody at BrandY gives a crap how I did things at BrandX, I thought this was a Good Idea.

Why it matters to me (and why, at the gate if I'm working the flight, I'm willing to get out of my seat and straighten things out in back if the FA brings something to our attention) is that I want to ensure they're going to follow the FA's instructions in the event of an emergency. If they're going to ignore trivial normal-ops stuff, their prompt compliance (which may save their life) is not assured in an emergency.

Why bother caring about this? Don't waste your energy. You honestly turn your phone all the way off every time you sit down in a plane with the MCD closed?

I have 2 phones, 3 laptops, 1 kindle, 1 tablet, 2 bluetooth headphone/headsets, and a tablet. I take all of them out of standby, and turn them all off completely before any leg I fly. Can't be too careful!
