Retirement/Pension/Medical Leave/Stuff

Ok, I just read the whole post about the retirement age and what the outcomeof the voting was. I was doing ok till that IRS stuff got my brain in a twist. LOL. Can some one help me understand better about retirement and pensions and things like that. It seems to my uninformed mind, that it would cost an airline MORE to pay not only a retired pilot but also to then raise another pilot to his position,KWIM? And what's with the paid medical leave? That doesn't seem fair, but I don't know the whole story. TIA!!

If you look on the websites of all the majors under career benefits or something like that they will have info on a lot of that stuff.
