Retirement Increase for ATC?

We already have the option to extend past 56, but it has to get approved on individual basis. At N90 I worked with people on their third or fourth extension.

So you can retire and get paid, or work and get paid and people chose to work?

Yeah. I never understood it. We had one guy worked til 59 and was dead from Lou Gehrig’s before he hit 60. I’d be out at 50 except my daughter turns 18 when I turn 56. Assuming we still have a retirement left

In my 12 years I have yet to see a controller that can actually still capably work past 56. The good ones realize their decline and almost always go before 56 anyways. The ones that stay are not the ones that should. Let's hope this isn't a way to get rid of our early retirement all together.

The hilarious part is that Pro-67+ pilots are excited about the FAA exploring an extension and assume ATC’ers are excited as well.

It’s an interesting set of people. I mentioned that assuming that controllers are giving one another high fives about working longer is a poor assumption and he threatened to turn me into the company for harassment. Ha!

I think I would have enjoyed being retired when my kids were young. So many cool places to show them (national parks, regions of the US, other countries), so many cool things to introduce to them (different cuisines, various forms of art, career possibilities, hobbies like car restoration), and the chance to show them practical stuff (home repairs, looking after the lawn). I’m not sure The Paycheck (i.e., the wife) would have embraced the idea, but it’s fun to dream.

56 is not a factor for a lot of us….almost everyone in my Area is going the minute they’re eligible.

That’s 48-52 for a lot of us. This current generation of ATC has been completely abused with OT and short staffing, and now pay/benefits not keeping up with the industry. Throw in the current political climate, I don’t know why anyone would want to stay until 56.

See ya, lol.
