Report 2 mile right base

You know, I've never really thought about this question and I've never really followed the request (I just report when established on base).

What does this request specifically mean? Do they want the pilot to report when 2 miles (straight-line distance) from the airport and on the base? Does it mean that they want the pilot to report when established on the base, 2 miles from the final approach course?

Thanks for the help

I always took it to mean established on a base leg that will intercept final two miles from the airport.

(Good question though. I have sometimes wondered if my understanding was correct, but have never clarified it for sure. Thanks for asking.)

Most controllers say that this is what they mean. If they wanted you two miles out on the final approach course, they'd say "report two mile final."

I can only speak for the controllers at SCK, but when we say "Enter (Enter and Report) a x mile right/left base" We want you to enter a standard right/left base and report on base, x miles from your turn to final. If we want you enter final x miles from the airport, we'll tell you to "enter a x mile final" or "widen out your base to enter a x mile final"

I believe a base report is to be made subject to turning a 1/2 mile final, and a 2 mile left base would be 2 miles from that 1/2 mile final. The controller can either have you continue with the approach at that point, or he can have you turn and enter the downwind for sequence.

Our airport has us do this 99% of the time. 2 miles from the extended runway centerline, so a 2 mile base leg, is what I think

A little side note here. If we the controllers ask you if you are able to turn base at a certain point, please give us a simple yes, no, affirm(ative) or negative answer, sometimes a "whatever you need" is good enough too. Thank you, end thread hijack.

I just prefer to grab pilots by the ears and tell them what to do when I don't have time. I'm sad that "Cleared Immediate takeoff or hold short" is gone.

You guys can't issue immediate takeoffs anymore? O.o

We still have it...

For example:
"Delta12345, ___ Tower, runway 28, fly runway heading cleared for immediate takeoff or hold short. Traffic is a learjet turning a three mile final."

If the pilot can do it, great, he goes without having to wait at least another two minutes.

If he can't, then he can wait, but the decision is up to him.

It means when you are on base and seeing 2 dme.......we call dme in the crosswind all the time when the pattern gets strung out, and that is exactly what they want.

I've always heard, "Report 2miles NW/NE ect.)." They do it for traffic sequencing. YMMV.

Well, they pulled it out of the .65, yeah, you can still say "N12345, ______ Tower, runway 29R, (departure instructions) cleared for immediate takeoff or hold short. (Traffic)"

If the pilot holds short, then you have to say, "Cancel Takeoff clearance, hold short of runways 29R"

I must say it is annoying when someone is cleared for immediate takeoff while you are on final, and the departing traffic pulls onto the runway, comes to a full stop on the numbers to finish getting ready, delaying just long enough that you have to go around.

That's the way I've always understood it, but wasn't sure exactly if that was what was meant.
Especially since sometiems it would seem that I was still more than two miles out and the tower would call me back and clear me to land, almost as if implying that I had forgotten to make the call. Though sometimes I had. :o
