Rental insurance predicament.

slushie

Still here.
The flight school I am intending to do my multi at requires the student/renter to maintain $30,000 of hull damage insurance.

I already have the renter's insurance for single engine from AOPA's deal-e-o (at $215 for a year), so I thought I'd call them and ask how much it would be to add on the same for my multi-engine training. A couple questions into the interrogation the lady asks "How much multi-time?" zero of course and she immediately goes "oh....." "It's gunna be hard to do with no twin time at all, but I'll call you when I get the information"
I got the return call:

over $1400!!!

What a load of crap!

I know we have some skymates/ari ben people on here. To you and any MEI's or multi-rated pilots I ask: Is this normal? How do I go about dealing with this catch-22?

You need to fly with a MEI who wants to share and build time. I wasn't even aware that you could get multi insurance unless it was through NAFI and you were a MEI. I paid $600.00 a year (as a MEI) for multi insurance throught NAFI (Falcon). Good Luck!

yep aopa sucks for multi. Avemco's policy is way cheaper for the twin stuff. the guy at Aopa even told me they were a better deal.

I looked at their site and I was confused as to whether it was the two prices added to gether for single and multi or if the "multi premium" was the price for both

Never heard of a school requiring students to carry insurance on the airplane they are renting with an instructor...especially for getting a multi rating. Heck yes, you will pay big for insurance if you have no multi time...but HELLO, you are a multi student.

I would have just hung up the phone as soon as I got that "Ohhh....it's gunna be hard with no twin time..."

you only need renters insurance if your solo. If its dual then its the instructors responsibility. That is messed up if they want renters insurance for dual.

go to skymates...1400 will get you your multi and you'll be done in 3 days.

If you think 1400 is bad I got a quote of $7,000 a year for my motorcycle!!

If they were just requiring you to have liability insurance that would be one thing, but if they are asking you to carry hull coverage on their aircraft then don't fly with them. The cost of hull coverage should be built into the hourly rate for the aircraft. That just means that they cant afford to insure it themselves.
