For existing pilots, take the FAASTeam test, present ID to FSDO/DPE/CFI and then complete via IACRA

For new pilots, the same but with TSA check included

I may not use it but I'm intrigued to have it on my certificate - is it a category/class or is it a separate cert?

Seems really simple for existing pilot; take on-line training course, submit application, get temporary certificate immediately, start flying. Even if a person doesn't own a drone, it seems that it would look good on the cert and it's way too easy to pass up.

Agreed! Will take the test and get the signoff this upcoming trip.

Then see what happens at the end of August!

Out of curiosity, what does the RPO certificate allow you to do with a drone that you can't do as an non-certified amateur? (I tried asking the Google machine with no luck)

Earn money using UAV's. If you don't have a certificate or an Exemption, you are not allowed to be compensated using them.

I might be misreading/understanding but from what I read there is no need to show ID or for a sign off IF you're already a certificated pilot (not student). What did I miss?

I wonder how they classify using one at work - like when it's a minor part of your job (we use one here to take video within the terminal at night)

Am doing the FAASTeam course at the minute.

The IACRA needs signing off by a DPE or ASI or CFI (but CFI cannot issue a temporary)

It is meant to satisfy the 'in person' ID and course certificate check.

At least if a fellow CFI can process the IACRA, this means it is easier (and cheaper no doubt) - but this isn't automated by IACRA (unlike FIRC etc)

Alex.

The line of the course seems to be receive payment or compensation = commercial operation

That would technically be illegal according to the FAA unless you currently have an exemption for those operations. When it is used in accordance with a business, it is considered "for compensation" from what I've read. When the new rules come into effect, the "PIC" of the UAV would have to have his certificate for UAV operations.

Now, is somebody going to pursue this? More than likely not, but just be aware of the rules as they currently stand because as a certificated pilot, the FAA will come down on you since you're supposed to know the rules.

I'm actually getting spooled up at my day job to operate UAS's. I'm in IT at a national lab and they put out a feeler for any pilots on staff. We have 5 or 6 vehicles (quadcopters and fixed wing). Our first week of training is actually the week after next. I'm going to start this process since I'm technically being compensated (it'll become a part time duty) and don't want to risk my commercial cert. I'll keep you all updated!

Yeh the only issue is we have to wait until it is available on iacra before we can get a signoff,

I think it'll cause a surge of applications, and on 29 Aug that might collide with a load of last minute ATPs?

I just sent an email to my local FSDO today asking if it is ok to apply with a paper 8710 which it says is ok before the August date. I will let the group know if I hear anything back.

I forgot last minute ATPs were July 31.

If you can do it via 8710 that would be great as I am in the US for a week from tomorrow.

Hilarity is: you can get the RPO thing on IACRA, but (at least for our AQP) paper is still required for the Riddle Restricted ATP.

Well iacra + a face to face Id check if you use FSDO/dpe.

I can print out my own temporary after a FIRC, crazy stuff

How can you print a temporary cert? Only FSDO / DPE are allowed I thought. CFI's can't issue a temp.

Correct me if I misread.
