Reminder to all those in flight training now

Don't forget to bring in your birth certificate/passport (or similar documentation) and a photo ID, to your training location if you receive training after tomorrow. They have to see originals, and keep a copy on file. There is no more hiding how old you truely are

A gave a link to a good outline of the new TSA rule in the flight instructor forum.

Your Birth Certificate (original) or a current passport with photo. Your flight school is required (starting tomorrow) to see them and keep a copy on file for 5 years in order for you (or anyone) to flight train.

Thank the TSA.

Word is that only new flight students have to, at least for my school. They first said that all would need them then they came back and said that the TSA changed their mind.

Because we all know that terrorists would stop trying to take flying lessons if they had to forge a passport.

Would you mind letting us all know how that was determined?

I'm happy with the students I have, and can deal with new people having to meet some stupid requirement. But having established students do this is just totally pointless. I mean the entire thing is pointless anyhow.

Of course I have already sent off email to all my students letting them know to bring in the stuff before their next training flight.

I think it is easier to buy an 'assult weapon' in California than it is to begin flight training now.

[/ QUOTE ]and therein lies the problem! why don't we crack down on other things too then? like buying a commercial vehicle (truck) or weapons purchases and/or training....

next thing you know, they'll start doing the same thing for computers! aaaiiggghh..

To add to what you said, you need to show a passport, if you do not have a passport then you need to show your US Birth Certificate (with the raised seal) & a government issued ID card such as a drivers license.

Wait, my understanding is that all those who have begun training prior to tomorrow will not need to meet this requirement. Is that right? We don't have to go back through all of our records do we?

I just read the new amendment yesterday:
Anyone in training prior to October 20th is hereby grandfathered under the new clause.

It was explained to me as that means is that you do NOT have to provide US citizenship proof if you started before the 20th. It was a big deal for me b/c I somehow lost my passport a few weeks ago and getting a new one (quickly) is a REAL pain for someone w/out a birth certificate.

[/ QUOTE ]what if you don't have a passport or a US BC? what if your training on a green card or some other form of immigrant status?

[/ QUOTE ] to get a birth certificate, you only need to call the recorders office in either the county or city you were born.. they should have it on file there. I was able to get a copy of mine a few years ago just by calling county records and filling out the requried forms!

Where can this 'new amendment' be found?

Go to

http://dms.dot.gov/search/searchResultsSimple.cfm

This is the site where public comments are made. If you scroll to today's entries you will see two items titled "Response" rather than "Comment". They are a series of letters that makes some interpretation changes. Some are interesting, such as redefining training to include only instruction toward a new certificate or rating - so, for example, flight reviews and checkouts are no longer considered flight training.

I only looked at them briefly, but I haven't seen anything yet on "grand fathering" folks that are already training for a certificate or rating.

And hopefully, these changes will be dealt with in an amendment to the rule itself rather than in a series of informal letters where the TSA can simple change its mind with no formal process at all.

All in all I think its pretty cool that someone is trying to do something to deter another "terrorist-type" event. Hopefully, the only ones complaining about it should be those without the proper documentation. First people complained nothing was being done, then when folks "try" to do something there is a big hoopla.
I got harrassed by the TSA many times. I got mad at first, but then realized that checking me, a little baby, or granny is a necessary step.
If I'm an american citizen and don't have a birth certificate, in my case I'mma be a man and get a new one. If it's lost get a new one. How are you gonna stop having eveidence of your citizenship LOL?
If you are OK with the new rule hopefully I'm not stepping on your toes, but if you're complainin about it and are an american then...........
